Overview
EN ISO 19403-5:2024 - Paints and varnishes - Wettability - Part 5 specifies an optical test method to determine the polar and dispersive fractions of the surface tension of liquids from contact angle measurements on a reference solid that has only a disperse contribution to its surface energy. The standard is intended mainly for the characterization of liquid coating materials and supports consistent, comparable wettability and surface-tension data for paints, varnishes and related products.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Optical determination of polar and dispersive surface-tension fractions; restrictions may apply for liquids with non-Newtonian behavior (see ISO 3219-1:2021).
- Principle: Four-step approach - (1) measure liquid surface tension (ISO 19403-3, EN 14370 or ISO 1409); (2) determine surface free energy of a dispersive reference solid (ISO 19403-2); (3) measure contact angle (static or dynamic) between liquid and reference solid (ISO 19403-2); (4) calculate dispersive and polar fractions using OWRK (Owens–Wendt–Rabel–Kaelble) or Wu methods.
- Reference solids: Use chemically and topologically homogeneous dispersive materials such as PTFE or paraffin. Recommended values: PTFE ≈ (18.5 ± 0.5) mJ/m and paraffin ≈ (25.5 ± 0.5) mJ/m (OWRK basis). Surface roughness R_a preferably < 0.3 µm.
- Test conditions: Standard ambient conditions - (23 ± 2) °C and relative humidity (50 ± 5) %; sampling according to ISO 15528.
- Data & evaluation: Calculate dispersive fraction (OWRK or Wu) then derive polar fraction from measured total surface tension. Use at least 10 drops per test liquid when determining reference solid energy.
Applications and users
- Coating formulators and R&D teams evaluating wetting and adhesion potential of liquid coatings.
- Quality control and testing laboratories establishing surface-tension parameters for batch acceptance and process control.
- Surface scientists and material suppliers characterizing liquids for adhesion, spreading, or substrate compatibility.
- Standards bodies and certification labs needing reproducible methods for reporting polar/dispersive contributions.
Practical uses include adhesive selection, primer evaluation, ink and paint spreading behavior, and predicting wetting performance on low-energy substrates.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
