Overview - EN ISO 1141:2021 (ISO 1141:2021) - Polyester fibre ropes

EN ISO 1141:2021 specifies requirements and designation rules for polyester fibre ropes in common constructions: 3‑strand hawser‑laid, 4‑strand shroud‑laid, 8‑strand braided and 12‑strand braided ropes for general service. The standard defines construction types (A, B, L, T), linear density (ktex), minimum breaking strength (MBS) values and marking rules. It replaces EN ISO 1141:2012 and clarifies that not all performance variations are covered - the rope manufacturer should be consulted to ensure suitability for a specific application.

Example designation: Fibre rope ISO 1141 – A – 30 – PES – 1
(3‑strand hawser‑laid, reference number 30, polyester, type 1 heat‑set)

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Constructions covered: Type A (3‑strand), Type B (4‑strand), Type L (8‑strand braided), Type T (12‑strand braided).
  • Designation rules: Number of the document (ISO 1141), construction/type code, reference number, material (PES) and stabilization type (1 = heat‑set, 2 = not heat‑set).
  • Linear density and MBS tables: Nominal linear densities (ktex) and corresponding minimum breaking strengths (kN) for new dry and wet ropes are provided in Tables 1–3. Linear density is measured under reference tension per ISO 2307.
  • Tolerances: Specified tolerances on linear density are included; the 2021 edition modified some linear density tolerances versus the previous edition.
  • Marking: Type 1 ropes with reference numbers < 14 must be marked with a blue thread; other marking follows ISO 9554.
  • Limitations and cautions: The standard notes that test MBS values depend on termination type, knots, bends, prior conditioning and test method - values in tables are not universal failure points in every situation.
  • Manufacturer responsibility: The rope manufacturer sets the MBS using internal statistical methods (see ISO 9554 Annex D) and should be consulted for specific designs.

Applications - who uses EN ISO 1141:2021

  • Rope manufacturers for design, production, labelling and declaration of polyester ropes.
  • Purchasers and specifiers in industries requiring general‑service polyester ropes (maritime, mooring, port operations, general utility), where standardized linear density and MBS values aid selection.
  • Test laboratories and quality assurance functions that verify linear density and breaking strength per ISO 2307 and ISO 9554.
  • Standards and compliance teams needing consistent designation and marking rules.

Related standards

  • ISO 2307 - determination of physical and mechanical properties (linear density, breaking tests)
  • ISO 9554 - general specifications for fibre ropes; includes marking and statistical methods for MBS (Annex D)
  • ISO 1968 - fibre ropes vocabulary (terms and definitions)

Keywords: EN ISO 1141:2021, ISO 1141:2021, polyester fibre ropes, 3‑strand rope, 4‑strand rope, 8‑strand braided, 12‑strand braided, minimum breaking strength, linear density, rope designation.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/ directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www .iso .org/ patents).
