Overview

EN 3060:2007 is a European Standard published by CEN that specifies the characteristics, dimensions, and load capacities of rigid single row ball bearings used in aerospace applications. These bearings are made of steel with cadmium plating and include a flanged alignment housing, also cadmium plated. Designed specifically for airframe rolling components, they accommodate slow rotations and oscillations under load and are used primarily in torsion lever hubs and separated supports within airframe assemblies.

The standard ensures reliable performance within a wide temperature range (-54 °C to 150 °C), making it suitable for the demanding environmental conditions of aerospace operations. When lubricated with specified greases, these bearings maintain optimal functionality and durability aligned with aerospace industry requirements.

Key Topics

  • Bearing Type and Design

    • Rigid single row ball bearings
    • Steel material with cadmium plating for corrosion resistance
    • Flanged alignment housing, also cadmium plated, available in solid or lightweight variants
    • Options for seals or shields as protective elements
  • Dimensional and Load Specifications

    • Detailed dimensional tolerances ensuring precise fit and performance
    • Static permissible axial and radial load values specified for various bearing sizes and housing types
    • Internal clearances and runout tolerances critical for operational reliability
    • Tight control on surface roughness for raceways, bore, and housing interfaces to ensure smooth operation
  • Material and Surface Treatments

    • Steel types conforming to aerospace-grade standards (e.g., EN 2031, EN 2221) with hardness between 59 HRC and 64 HRC
    • Cadmium plating thickness between 5 µm to 20 µm on rings and 10 µm to 20 µm on housing for enhanced corrosion protection

Applications

EN 3060 bearings are specifically engineered for airframe and aerospace rolling element requirements, including:

  • Aircraft Torsion Lever Hubs
Bearings accommodate slow, oscillatory motion critical to torsion lever mechanisms in aircraft structures, ensuring precise and durable performance over operational lifespan.

  • Separated Airframe Support Structures
The robust design and flanged alignment housing provide secure installations for separated support bearings in aerospace assemblies, maintaining alignment under load.

  • Temperature-Variable Aerospace Environments
The bearings’ ability to function within extreme temperature ranges makes them suitable for flight conditions involving significant temperature gradients, from high-altitude cold environments to warmer operational scenarios.

  • High-Corrosion Resistance Requirements
Cadmium plating combined with specified greases ensures protection against corrosion, vital for aerospace components exposed to diverse atmospheric conditions.
