General Information

Abstract

This document specifies the characteristics of homogeneous floor coverings, based on poly(vinyl chloride), supplied in either tile or roll form. Products can contain a transparent, non-PVC factory finish.
To encourage the consumer to make an informed choice, this document also includes a classification system (see ISO 10874) based on intensity of use, which shows where these floor coverings give satisfactory service. It also specifies requirements for marking.

Overview

EN ISO 10581:2020 specifies requirements for homogeneous poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) resilient floor coverings supplied as tiles or rolls. It defines product identification, minimum performance characteristics, a use-based classification system (see ISO 10874) to help consumers and specifiers choose appropriate flooring, and mandatory marking, labelling and packaging information. Products may include a transparent, non‑PVC factory finish.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Binder content (identification): three types by PVC binder percentage
    • Type I: > 55%
    • Type II: 35–55%
    • Type III: 25–<35%
  • Dimensional and physical tolerances: tests referenced include ISO 24341 (rolls), ISO 24342 (tiles) and ISO 24346 (thickness). Typical requirements: thickness average = nominal +0.15/‑0.10 mm; individual results within ±0.15 mm of average.
  • Mass per unit area: average within nominal –10% to +13% (ISO 23997).
  • Residual indentation: average ≤ 0.1 mm (ISO 24343‑1).
  • Dimensional stability after heat: ≤ 0.40% (sheets/tiles intended for welding) and ≤ 0.25% (tiles for dry‑joint laying) (ISO 23999).
  • Flexibility: no cracking on a 20 mm mandrel (ISO 24344).
  • Castor chair resistance: after 25 000 cycles, no delamination and only slight appearance change (ISO 4918).
  • Colour fastness to artificial light: ≥ grade 6 (ISO 105‑B02) or ΔE ≤ 8 after 300 h (ASTM F1515).
  • Seam strength and classification: seam strength requirements depend on the level of use/class (domestic, commercial, light industrial) and product type; seam strength values typically range from about 1.0 to 2.5 N/50 mm (see ISO 16906 and ISO 10874 for classification detail).
  • Marking and labelling: must include standard reference (ISO 10581), manufacturer ID, product name, colour/pattern, batch/roll number, product class/symbol, dimensions and area/length where applicable.

Applications and who uses it

  • Manufacturers use EN ISO 10581:2020 for product design, production control and conformity demonstration of homogeneous PVC flooring.
  • Testing laboratories apply the referenced test methods to verify compliance (dimensional stability, indentation, seam strength, etc.).
  • Architects, specifiers and contractors rely on the classification and performance data to select flooring for domestic, commercial or light‑industrial environments.
  • Procurement and quality managers use marking and classification requirements in tenders and acceptance criteria.
  • Retailers and consumers benefit from the classification information (via ISO 10874) to make informed choices.

Related standards

  • ISO 10874 (classification by intensity of use)
  • ISO 24341, ISO 24342, ISO 24343‑1, ISO 24344, ISO 24346, ISO 23997, ISO 23999, ISO 4918, ISO 105‑B02, ISO 16906
  • Optional/ancillary tests: reaction to fire (EN ISO 9239‑1, ISO 11925‑2), electrical resistance (EN 1081), staining (ISO 26987), ASTM methods.

Keywords: EN ISO 10581:2020, homogeneous PVC floor covering, resilient floor coverings, ISO 10874, binder content, seam strength, dimensional stability, residual indentation, product marking.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/ directives).
