Overview
ISO 24343-1:2007 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies a reliable and repeatable method for determining the residual indentation in resilient and laminate floor coverings. Residual indentation refers to the permanent deformation or thickness loss remaining after a floor covering has been subjected to a constant load and allowed adequate recovery time.
This standard applies primarily to various resilient and laminate floor materials widely used in commercial and residential flooring applications. It provides a clear procedure to measure how well these materials resist permanent indentation under static pressure, helping manufacturers, specifiers, and quality control personnel assess durability and product performance.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose
Defines a test method to quantify the difference between the initial thickness and the thickness of a resilient or laminate flooring material after loading and recovery, known as residual indentation.Test Apparatus
Specifies the essential equipment needed, including:- A cylindrical steel indenter with 11.30 mm diameter
- Rigid horizontal platform
- Load application device able to exert a total force of 500 N smoothly
- Comparator for measuring indentation depth to ±0.01 mm accuracy
- Thickness measuring instrument with applied mass as per the type of floor covering
- Stopwatch and annular weights for load distribution
Test Environment and Conditioning
Conditioning of test specimens at (23 ± 2) °C and relative humidity of (50 ± 5)% for a minimum of 24 hours ensures consistent environmental factors during testing.Test Procedure
Involves measuring initial thickness, applying a constant load using the indenter and dead weights, recording indentation after 150 minutes, removing the load, allowing a further 150 minutes for recovery, and measuring the final thickness. The residual indentation is calculated as the difference between initial and final thickness values.Result Calculation and Reporting
Residual indentation is expressed in millimeters with precision to 0.01 mm. The test report should include complete product details, mean residual indentation, indentation after 150 minutes, any deviations from the standard, and test conditions.
Applications
Quality Control and Product Development
Flooring manufacturers utilize ISO 24343-1 to evaluate the indentation resistance of new and existing resilient and laminate floor products, ensuring they meet performance and durability criteria.Specification and Compliance
Architects, contractors, and specifiers reference this standard to select flooring materials that offer the required resistance to indentation for various environments such as offices, retail spaces, and residential areas.Performance Benchmarking
The standard supports comparative analysis across different products and helps establish benchmarks for improvement in materials and construction techniques of floor coverings.Post-installation Assessment
Enables facility managers and maintenance professionals to assess wear and durability over time by comparing measured residual indentation with initial product specifications.
Related Standards
ISO 24343-2 (Short Term Indentation)
Complements Part 1 by specifying methods for determining short-term indentation behavior of floor coverings.EN 433 (European Standard)

ISO 24343-1:2007 plays a critical role in standardized evaluation of resilient and laminate flooring products, delivering valuable data for material selection, quality assurance, and ensuring long-term performance under load. Adherence to this standard supports industry transparency and helps maintain consistent flooring quality across international markets.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
