The EN 50615/A2:2026 includes the following significant technical changes:
— Introduce requirements for Gas Hob appliances.
This document has been prepared under a standardization request addressed to CENELEC by the European
Commission. The Standing Committee of the EFTA States subsequently approves these requests for its
Member States.
For the relationship with EU Legislation, see informative Annex ZZA, which is an integral part of
EN 50615:2015/prA1:2026.
Secretary’s note: The text contained in the Secretary’s notes will be removed from the standard before
publication, as it is provided solely to inform stakeholders about the reasons for introducing the European
common modifications.
Secretary’s note
EN 60335 series of standards covers different typologies of domestic surface cooking appliances, as electric
hobs in prEN IEC 60335-2-6:2025+prA11:2026, and gas hobs having electrical connections in
EN IEC 60335-2-102:2023+A11:2023. However, the standard EN 50615, which is dedicated to the safe
disconnection of electric hobs in case of a hazardous situation only considers the electric ones, disregarding
the ones using gas. Gas hobs having automatic burner control systems can also be disconnected in case of a
hazardous situation detected by a fire prevention / suppression device covered by EN 50615. The safety of
those domestic cooking appliances burning gas is covered by the standards EN 30-1-4 and
EN IEC 60335-2-102. Other gas hobs having mechanical controls shall not be considered suitable for the safety
devices covered by EN 50615.
The objective of this proposal is to align the different technologies for domestic cooking hobs (domestic electric
or gas cooktops having electrical connections and automatic burner control systems) with similar safety systems
to prevent hazardous situations in case of a foreseeable misuse, by using already existing and recognized fire
prevention and / or suppression devices.
It is necessary to consider that the safety level for both type of appliances shall be similar in terms of detection
or prevention, to avoid a hazardous situation.
This standard shall be used in conjunction with
EN IEC 60335-2-102
EN 30-1-1
EN 30-1-4
1 Modification to the title
Replace the title of the standard with the following:
“Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Particular requirements for devices for fire prevention
and suppression for electric hobs, and gas hobs having automatic burner control systems (cooktops).”
2 Modification to Clause 1, “Scope”
Addition:
This European Amendment A2 supplements or modifies the corresponding clauses of the standards below:
— EN IEC 60335-1:2023+A11:2023+prA12:2026 (Part 1)
— EN 50615:2015+prA1:2026 (Part 2)
The appliance can be combined with a fuel burning function, in which case EN IEC 60335-2-102 is also
applicable. All safety aspects related to the use of fuel-burning gas are covered by the relevant product standard
for fuel-burning appliances.
3 Modification to Clause 2, “Normative references”
Addition:
EN 30-1-4:2012, Domestic cooking appliances burning gas - Safety - Part 1-4: Appliances having one or more
burners with an automatic burner control system
Justification for proposal:
It’s necessary to include this normative reference for gas hobs, as they cover the general safety of those
products.
4 Modification to Clause 11, “Heating”
11.101 Add the following paragraphs between the second and third paragraph:
“Protective devices shall not react while uncovered plates or burners are operated. For electric hobs, the
protective device shall not be operated by the heat or radiation arising from the uncovered plates. In the case
of gas burning hobs, flame coming from the natural combustion of the uncovered gas burners shall not trigger
the fire prevention or suppression system.
Protective device shall not react to the flame, heat or radiation arising from the burner, even if the pan is removed
from the plate or the burner during a cooking process.”
Secretary’s Note
The natural process to cook with a gas hob is to have a flame in the burner. The system shall not consider that
this is an undesired situation, but a natural process. Therefore, the system shall be able to distinguish a flame
used to cook from other possible unexpected fires arising from the cooking process.
