Overview
EN IEC 62386-207:2018 (IEC 62386-207:2018) is the second-edition European/IEC standard that specifies DALI (digital addressable lighting interface) requirements for LED modules (device type 6) and their digital bus control. It defines a bus system for digital control of electronic lighting equipment in line with IEC 61347 series requirements, with the explicit addition of DC supplies. This edition (2018) supersedes EN 62386-207:2009 and introduces technical revisions to better align LED module control gear with the wider IEC 62386 DALI framework.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & system context: Works together with IEC 62386‑101 (system components) and IEC 62386‑102 (control gear general requirements). Targets LED modules as DALI device type 6.
- Electrical and interface requirements: Specifies electrical behaviour for LED control gear operated via the DALI bus, including added support for DC supplies.
- Transmission and timing: Defines transmission protocol structure, timing and method of operation for digital commands and responses.
- Dimming and fade control: Updates on fast fade time (redefined in this edition). Note that full dimming curve selection has been moved to a separate part (IEC 62386‑218).
- Thermal and protection handling: Thermal gear and lamp protection functions have been reorganized into separate parts (e.g., thermal gear protection IEC 62386‑217).
- Feature & failure reporting: Defines feature information, failure status reporting and mappings to IEC 62386‑102 error bits.
- Command set changes: Several previously defined commands were removed (for example: ENABLE/DISABLE CURRENT PROTECTOR, QUERY SHORT CIRCUIT, QUERY OPEN CIRCUIT, QUERY OPERATING MODE, etc.).
- Modularity of parts: Several topics moved to dedicated parts (load referencing, thermal protections, non‑replaceable light source, etc.) to simplify device-type specifications.
Applications and who uses it
- Lighting product manufacturers: LED module and control-gear designers use this standard to ensure DALI compatibility and safe operation with AC and DC supplies.
- System integrators & specifiers: Building automation designers and lighting specifiers rely on the standard when specifying digital lighting installations and ensuring interoperability.
- Installers & test engineers: For commissioning, interoperability testing and compliance verification of DALI-controlled LED modules.
- Regulatory & conformity bodies: For certification, compliance assessment and harmonized national adoption (CENELEC/CLC adoption).

The EN IEC 62386-207:2018 standard provides comprehensive guidelines specific to the Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI), particularly focusing on control gear for LED modules designated as device type 6. This international standard is pivotal in establishing a robust framework for electronic lighting equipment controlled via digital signals, ensuring compatibility with the broader IEC 61347 standards. One of the strengths of this standard is its emphasis on technical revision, which reflects the evolving nature of lighting technology. The updates made from the previous edition, including the redefinition of fast fade time, streamline the operational parameters of LED modules.
