Overview

EN 60335-1:2012/A15:2021 is a CENELEC amendment to the European safety standard EN 60335-1 - "Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 1: General requirements". It applies to electrical appliances for household and similar use with rated voltages up to 250 V for single‑phase and 480 V for other supplies. Amendment A15 (approved 2021‑03‑01, published June 2021) updates normative references, construction and component rules, stability/mechanical hazard wording and several annexes to align product safety and conformity requirements across CENELEC members.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and applicability: General safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances within the specified voltage limits.
  • General requirements & normative references: A15 modifies Clause 2 (normative references) and Clause 4 (general requirements), including the removal of a specific CLC/TR reference previously recommended for interpretation.
  • Stability and mechanical hazards: Clause 20 wording changed (e.g., “dangerous” → “hazardous”) and test conditions clarified for mechanical safety and probe testing (IEC 61032 referenced).
  • Construction and child‑appeal rules: New definition and criteria for child‑appealing appliances (decorations, shapes, non‑functional light/sound/movement). Special limits apply when appliance mass < 4 kg or intended for use/mounting < 850 mm:
    • Surface temperature rise limits for accessible parts (test probe 19): bare metal 38 K, coated metal 42 K, glass/ceramic 51 K, plastics (>0.4 mm) 58 K.
    • Hazardous moving parts and live parts must not be accessible by probe 19 under specified test conditions.
    • Liquid temperature limits: accessible liquids must not exceed 38 °C in normal use.
  • Components and interfaces: Clause 24 updated; remote operation via telecommunication networks must comply with the relevant telecommunication interface standard IEC 62151.
  • Annexes & national conditions: Annex ZA updated to modify special national conditions (e.g., inclusion of Cyprus for a clause). Annex ZC provides the normative mapping to many referenced EN/IEC publications.

Applications - who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers and product designers of household and similar electrical appliances seeking CE marking and LVD compliance.
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing safety testing (mechanical, thermal, electrical) to EN 60335‑1 requirements.
  • Safety engineers, compliance managers, importers and regulatory authorities operating in the EU and CENELEC member countries.
  • Technical writers and standards specialists preparing documentation and declarations of conformity.

The standard EN 60335-1:2012/A15:2021 provides comprehensive guidelines for the safety of household and similar electrical appliances, applicable to both domestic and commercial settings. Its scope is particularly relevant as it addresses appliances with a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V for single-phase configurations and 480 V for others, ensuring clarity in the types of devices that fall under its regulations. One of the key strengths of this standard lies in its thorough approach to safety requirements. It encompasses a wide range of criteria, including mechanical, electrical, thermal, and fire safety considerations, which are essential for minimizing risks associated with electrical appliances. By establishing these requirements, the standard not only protects end-users but also enhances product reliability and marketability for manufacturers. Another significant advantage of EN 60335-1:2012/A15:2021 is its harmonization with other existing European safety standards, promoting consistency and ease of compliance across member states. The incorporation of international safety benchmarks ensures that electrical appliances manufactured or sold within Europe adhere to rigorous safety standards, thereby fostering consumer confidence in product safety. Moreover, the standard’s relevance is underscored by its alignment with current technological advancements and emerging appliance types. By continuously updating the document, including the latest amendment A15 in 2021, it effectively addresses new safety challenges, reflecting the evolving landscape of household and similar electrical appliances.
