Overview

EN IEC 63203-201-3:2021 - part of the IEC 63203 series on wearable electronic devices and technologies - specifies a laboratory test method for determining the electrical resistance of conductive textiles under a simulated microclimate. The simulated microclimate is the thin air layer between skin and clothing with defined temperature and humidity. This standard applies to conductive fabrics and multilayer textile assemblies intended for integration into clothing and smart textile products.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test scope: Measurement of electrical behaviour of textile-based conductive tracks when exposed to realistic microclimate conditions inside clothing.
  • Test principle and equipment: Uses a sweating guarded-hotplate to simulate skin heat and moisture; measurement instrumentation includes a device with temperature/humidity sensors and a four‑electrode / four‑wire arrangement for stable electrical readings.
  • Measured quantities:
    • Linear electrical resistance (R_L) - electrical resistance per unit length (expressed in ohm per metre).
    • Water‑vapour resistance including air layer (R_et_al) - quantifies evaporative resistance of the fabric–air system (expressed in m²·Pa/W).
  • Specimen requirements: Definitions and requirements for textile‑based electrically conductive tracks (minimum length:width ratio 10:1), number of specimens, dimensions and conditioning according to standard atmospheres.
  • Procedure elements: Preparation of contact points, specimen mounting, determination of apparatus constants, and reporting of results. Annexes give example data and reporting formats.
  • Normative references: Integrates established test standards (ISO 139, ISO 11092, ISO 21232, EN 16812) to ensure reproducible conditioning and comparison.

Applications and users

Who benefits from using EN IEC 63203-201-3:2021:

  • Textile and smart‑garment manufacturers validating conductive yarns, printed tracks, and multilayer assemblies for wearable electronics.
  • R&D teams and product designers assessing performance of e-textiles under realistic thermal and humidity loads.
  • Independent testing laboratories and quality control departments for acceptance testing and product specifications.
  • Safety and compliance engineers ensuring durable electrical performance in garments (healthcare wearables, sportswear, heated clothing, sensors).
Practical uses include performance benchmarking, material selection, durability assessment and verifying integration methods for conductive tracks in garments.

Related standards

Relevant referenced standards that complement testing under microclimate conditions:

  • ISO 139 - standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing
  • ISO 11092:2014 - sweating guarded‑hotplate test for thermal and water‑vapour resistance
  • ISO 21232:2018 - measuring microclimate using a sweating guarded‑hotplate
  • EN 16812:2016 - determination of linear electrical resistance of conductive tracks

EN IEC 63203-201-3:2021 is essential for anyone developing or testing conductive textiles and smart garments who needs reliable, repeatable electrical resistance data under realistic wearer conditions.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
