Overview

EN IEC 63203-101-1:2021 is an essential European Standard developed by CLC under the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It focuses on establishing clear, internationally aligned terminology for wearable electronic devices and technologies. This standard belongs to the broader IEC 63203 series dedicated to wearable electronics, including near-body, on-body, in-body devices, and electronic textiles. By providing a uniform vocabulary, it facilitates effective communication, development, and interoperability within the wearable electronics industry.

Key Topics

  • Wearable Electronic Devices
Defined as electronic devices intended to be located near, on, or in the human body. The standard distinguishes among:

    • Near-body wearable electronic device: Positioned close to but not in direct contact with the body.
    • On-body wearable electronic device: Directly contacts the external surface of the body (excluding hand-held portable devices).
    • In-body wearable electronic device: Implanted or inserted inside the body.
  • Wearable Electronic Technologies
Encompasses materials, applications, devices, components, systems, or networks related to the development and deployment of wearable electronics.

  • Electronic Skin and Patchable Electronics

    • Electronic skin: Flexible and elastic devices attached to the skin, mimicking physical properties of human skin.
    • Patchable electronics: Devices/components that attach directly to the human body.
  • Advanced Materials and Functionalities

    • Biodegradable electronics: Devices designed to dissolve naturally after use, supporting applications such as body monitoring and wound healing.
    • Ingestible electronics: Devices designed to be swallowed and operate inside the body.
    • Conformable and stretchable devices: Electronics capable of changing shape or operating under mechanical deformation without failure.
  • Electronic Textiles and Smart Textile Systems

    • Electronic textiles (e-textiles): Fibres, yarns, or fabrics integrated with electronic components.
    • Smart textile systems: Textile-based systems responsive to environmental changes or external inputs.
    • Conductive, semiconductive, and insulating fibres/yarns/fabrics: Materials classified by their electrical properties crucial for electronic textile design.
  • Key Component Definitions

    • Sensors: Devices producing electrical signals in response to physical phenomena, critical in wearable monitoring.
    • Flexible and stretchable substrates: Materials that provide necessary flexibility and elasticity for wearable devices.

Applications

EN IEC 63203-101-1:2021 terminology supports a wide range of practical applications in wearable electronics such as:

  • Healthcare Monitoring
Standardized terms help in developing wearable biomedical devices, including patchable and in-body electronics used for continuous health tracking, wound healing, and therapy delivery.

  • Smart Textiles for Sports and Safety
Enables innovation in textile-integrated sensors and responsive clothing that monitor physiological parameters or environmental conditions.

  • Consumer Electronics and Lifestyle Devices
Facilitates terminology consistency for manufacturers of smartwatches, fitness bands, and other on-body devices ensuring proper classification and interoperability.

  • Research and Development
Provides a foundational terminology framework for academia and industry engaged in materials science and wearable tech innovations, including flexible electronics and biodegradable components.

Related Standards

  • IEC 63203 Series
Additional parts expand on specific requirements, testing, and performance for wearable electronic devices and technologies.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
