Overview
EN 62852:2015/A1:2020 (adoption of IEC 62852:2014/A1:2020) specifies safety requirements and test procedures for connectors for DC applications in photovoltaic (PV) systems. This CENELEC amendment A1 updates the original 2015 standard by adding construction, marking and test requirements to improve long‑term reliability, thermal endurance and mechanical performance of PV DC connectors. The amendment explicitly excludes connectors for data collection or tracker controls (but may be used as a guide for them).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and exclusions: Applies to DC power connectors used in PV arrays; not intended for data/tracker-control connectors.
- Marking & identification: Connectors must carry identification and specified temperatures including ULT, LLT and maximum ambient temperature (the amendment requires a minimum declared maximum ambient of +85 °C). Manufacturers must also list RTE/RTI or TI values for polymeric insulators.
- Material thermal endurance: Polymeric insulating parts (inner and outer) require approved relative thermal endurance / relative thermal index (RTE/RTI) or temperature index (TI) in accordance with IEC 60216 series; UL 746B RTI values are accepted as alternative.
- Construction & conductors: Connectors must accept conductor types and cross‑sections declared by manufacturer, avoid insulation damage, and use conductors suitable for PV (reference IEC 62930). Flexible conductors should be Class 5 (IEC 60228); Class 2 allowed for fixed installations.
- Mechanical and climatic tests:
- Mechanical operation cycles as specified by the manufacturer.
- Cable anchorage tests: Pull test (50 pulls of 1 s) with displacement ≤ 2 mm after unloading; torsion test with rotation limit ≤ 45°. Specific pull forces and torques are defined by cable diameter (see Table 13/14 in the standard).
- Temperature rise (ULT) limits; damp‑heat testing aligned to IEC 61215‑2 severity; thermal cycling to specified extremes (including +85 °C / -40 °C references).
- Degree of protection: Accessibility and probe tests per IEC 61032; insulation coordination guidance referenced (IEC TR 60664‑2‑1).
Applications and audience
Who uses EN 62852:2015/A1:2020:
