Fire hazard testing - Part 2-10: Glowing/hot-wire based test methods - Glow-wire apparatus and common test procedure

IEC 60695-2-10:2013 specifies the glow-wire apparatus and common test procedure to simulate the effects of thermal stresses which may be produced by heat sources such as glowing elements or overloaded resistors, for short periods, in order to assess the fire hazard by a simulation technique. The test procedure described in this standard is a common test procedure intended for the small-scale tests in which a standardized electrically heated wire is used as a source of ignition. It is a common part of the test procedures applied to end products and to solid electrical insulating materials or other solid combustible materials. A detailed description of each particular test procedure is given in the respective standards IEC 60695-2-11, IEC 60695-2-12 and IEC 60695-2-13. This second edition of IEC 60695-2-10 cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC 60695-2-10 published in 2000. This edition constitutes a technical revision. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are as follows: - A table of contents has been added. - The introduction has been updated to align with other TC89 documents. - The scope has been clarified to align with other documents in the IEC 60695-2 Glow-wire series. - Terms and definitions relevant to this document have been added. - Clause 4 has been deleted and the remaining clauses renumbered. - The description of the power supply has been updated with additional details (see 4.1). - The temperature measuring system (see 4.3) and the description of the specified layer has been updated (see 4.4). - New guidance has been introduced to assist in the verification of the temperature measuring system (see 5.2 and Annex C). - The common test produced has been clarified (see Clause 7). - The tolerances have been changed for the dimensions of the glow-wire (see Figure 1). - New guidance on flaming observations has been added (see Annex B). It has the status of a basic safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51. La CEI 60695-2-10:2013 spécifie un appareil d'essai au fil incandescent et une procédure d'essai commune pour simuler l'effet de contraintes thermiques qui peuvent être produites par des sources de chaleur telles que des éléments incandescents ou des résistances surchargées, sur de courtes durées, afin d'évaluer de façon simulée les risques du feu. La procédure d'essai décrite dans la présente norme représente une procédure d'essai commune destinée aux essais à petite échelle qui utilisent un fil normalisé chauffé électriquement comme source d'allumage. Il s'agit d'une partie commune des procédures d'essai appliquées aux produits finis et aux matériaux isolants électriques solides ou à d'autres matériaux combustibles. Une description détaillée de chaque procédure d'essai particulière est donnée dans la CEI 60695-2-11, la CEI 60695-2-12 et la CEI 60695-2-13. Ta del standarda IEC 60695 opredeljuje aparat z žarilno žico in določa postopek splošnega preskusa za simulacijo učinkov toplotne preobremenitve, ki jih lahko ustvarijo žareči elementi ali preobremenjeni upori, v kratkih časovnih obdobjih, za ocenjevanje požarne ogroženosti s simulacijsko metodo. Preskusni postopek, opisan v tem standardu, je postopek splošnega preskusa, namenjen za manjše preskuse, v katerih se kot vir vžiga uporabi standardizirana električna ogrevana žica. Običajno se uporablja pri preskusnih postopkih za končne proizvode in za trdne električne izolacijske materiale ali druge trde gorljive materiale. This part of IEC 60695 specifies the details of the glow-wire test to be applied to test specimens of solid electrical insulating materials or other solid materials for flammability testing to determine the glow-wire flammability index (GWFI). GWFI is the highest temperature, determined during this standardized procedure, at which the tested material does not ignite or, if it does, extinguishes within 30 s after removal of the glow-wire and is not totally consumed; and molten drips, if they occur, do not ignite the wrapping tissue. This test method is a materials test carried out on a series of standard test specimens. The data obtained, along with data from the glow-wire ignition temperature (GWIT) test method for materials, IEC 60695-2-13, can then be used in a preselection process in accordance with IEC 60695-1-30 [4] to judge the ability of materials to meet the requirements of IEC 60695-2-11. NOTE As an outcome of conducting a fire hazard assessment, an appropriate series of preselection flammability and ignition tests can allow a reduction of end product testing. This basic safety publication focusing on safety test method(s) is primarily intended for use by technical committees in the preparation of safety publications in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51. The GWIT is the temperature which is 25 K (or 30 K) higher than the maximum test temperature, determined during this standardized procedure, at which the tested material does not ignite, or sustained flaming combustion does not occur for a time longer than 5 s for any single flame event and the specimen is not totally consumed. This test is a materials test carried out on a series of standard test specimens. The data obtained, along with data from the glow-wire flammability index (GWFI) test method for materials, IEC 60695-2-12, can then be used in a preselection process in accordance with IEC 60695-1-30 [4] to judge the ability of materials to meet the requirements of IEC 60695-2-11. The structure of this standard remains essentially the same with some major new changes and concepts added: - The scope has been broadened to allow this test method to also simulate the effects of small flames from outside the equipment. - A new concept has been added which allows the burner to be moved during the test to avoid dripping material from falling onto the tip of the burner tube. - The burner tube material is now a referenced source. - The reference for the copper block material has changed - the ISO publication (ISO 1337) has been withdrawn with no replacement. A new callout is now used. - Informative Annex B and a bibliography have been added. It has the status of a basic safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104.

IEC 60695-1-30:2008 provides guidance for assessing and choosing candidate materials, components or sub-assemblies for making an end-product based upon preselection testing. It describes how preselection provides comparative fire hazard test methods to evaluate the performance of a test specimen and how preselection can be used in the selection of materials, parts, components and sub-assemblies during the design stage of an end-product. The major changes with respect to the previous edition are as follows: - Further explanation given in the introduction and Scope - Clause 3 changes to the definitions - Clause 4 clarifications of the principles of product design considering preselection - Clause 5 clarifications of the advantages and limitations of preselection - Clause 6 clarifications of the aspects of preselection relative to hazard assessment - Annex A changes in the references for examples of test methods which may be relevant to preselection - Annex B changes in the illustrative example of the flowchart of the use of preselection tests for resistance to fire hazards of a specific product type. This publication has the status of a basic safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51.
