EN IEC 60317-18:2020
(Main)Specifications for particular types of winding wires - Part 18: Polyvinyl acetal enamelled rectangular copper wire, class 120
General Information
- Abstract
IEC 60317-18:2020 is available as IEC 60317-18:2020 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.IEC 60317-18:2020 specifies the requirements of enamelled rectangular copper winding wires of class 120 with a sole coating based on polyvinyl acetal or polyvinyl formal resin, which can be modified provided it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements NOTE 1 A modified resin is a resin that has undergone a chemical change, or contains one or more additives to enhance certain performance or application characteristics. NOTE 2 Polyvinyl acetate is a general name for a family of thermoplastic vinyl resins produced by the condensation of polyvinyl alcohol with an aldehyde. Examples are polyvinyl acetal, polyvinyl formal and polyvinyl butyral. The range of nominal conductor dimensions covered by this document is: - width: min. 2,0 mm max. 31,5 mm; - thickness: min. 0,80 mm max. 10,0 mm. Wires of grade 1 and grade 2 are included in this specification and apply to the complete range of conductors. The specified combinations of width and thickness as well as the specified ratio width/thickness are given in IEC 60317-0-2. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2004 and Amendment 1:2009. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - modification of the Scope (Clause 1); - revision to thermal class designation from 105 to 120 in 3.2.2; - renaming of stretching test to adherence test, and modification to the requirements in 8.2; - revision to the cut-through requirement in Clause 10.

Overview
EN IEC 60317-18:2020 (IEC 60317-18:2020 RLV) specifies requirements for polyvinyl acetal enamelled rectangular copper winding wire, class 120. This fourth edition replaces the 2004 edition and its amendment, and is published as a Redline Version (RLV) showing technical changes. The standard covers sole-coating enamel systems based on polyvinyl acetal / polyvinyl formal resins (including permitted modified resins that retain the original chemical identity) and applies to rectangular copper conductors used in electrical windings.
Key dimensional range:
- Width: 2.0 mm to 31.5 mm
- Thickness: 0.80 mm to 10.0 mm
Grades included: Grade 1 and Grade 2 across the full conductor range.
Key Topics and Requirements
EN IEC 60317-18:2020 defines material, dimensional and performance requirements and references test procedures. Important technical topics include:
- Thermal class designation: updated to class 120 (was 105 in the previous edition).
- Coating chemistry: polyvinyl acetal / polyvinyl formal base; additives allowed if chemical identity is retained.
- Mechanical and electrical tests: electrical resistance, elongation, springiness.
- Flexibility and adherence: mandrel winding test and the renamed adherence test (formerly stretching test) with updated requirements.
- Thermal and mechanical durability: heat shock, cut-through (revised requirements), resistance to abrasion.
- Chemical resistance: solvents, refrigerants, transformer oil.
- Electrical insulation performance: breakdown voltage, continuity of insulation, dielectric dissipation factor, pin hole test.
- Processing and assembly properties: solderability; heat or solvent bonding.
- Ageing and stability: temperature index, loss of mass.
- Packaging and documentation: packaging requirements and normative references.
The standard is intended to be used together with IEC 60317-0-2:2020 (general requirements for enamelled rectangular copper wire) and refers to the IEC 60851 series for test methods.
Applications
This standard is directly relevant to manufacturers and specifiers of enamelled rectangular copper wire for windings in electrical equipment, including:
- Motors, transformers and inductors
