Electric motor-operated tools - Dust measurement procedure - Part 2-4: Particular requirements for sanders other than disk type
1.1 General This European Standard specifies general requirements for the dust measurement of electric motor-operated tools supplied from mains or from batteries. This standard applies to those tools with and without dust extraction unit where dust such as mineral dust containing silica or wood dust is expected. 1.2 Types of dust Dust is a disperse distribution of solid substances in gases, particularly air, resulting from mechanical processes. According to EN 481, two size categories are to be differentiated: the inhalable dust and the respirable dust fraction. Inhalable dust refers to the entire inhalable fraction of the dust through mouth and/or nose. Respirable dust relates to the fraction of the inhalable dust that can reach the pulmonary alveoli due to its small particle size. This part of EN 50632 applies to sanders with the exception of all types of rotating disc-type sanders, which are covered by EN 50632-2-3.

EN 50632-2-4:2016 is a European Standard developed by CLC that defines the dust measurement procedure for electric motor-operated sanders, excluding rotating disc-type sanders which are covered under EN 50632-2-3. This standard specifies particular requirements for the assessment of dust emissions from various sander types, critical for ensuring operator safety and compliance with occupational health regulations.
The standard applies to electric motor-operated sanding tools powered from mains or batteries, both with and without dust extraction units. It targets dust types including mineral dust containing silica and wood dust-common respirable hazards in sanding operations.
Key Topics in EN 50632-2-4:2016
Scope and Application: Focus on non-disc-type sanders such as orbital, random orbit, reciprocating, and belt sanders. Addresses dust exposure from sanding mineral materials (gypsum) and wood.
Dust Types and Categories: Differentiates between inhalable dust (able to enter mouth/nose) and respirable dust (fine particles reaching pulmonary alveoli), aligned with EN 481 definitions.
Test Procedures:
- Defined operating conditions for sanding gypsum blocks, wood, and wooden floors.
- Testing under load conditions with specified sanding papers (P80 grain size).
- Control of variables such as feed force, speed setting, and tool orientation.
- Minimum required material removal to ensure representative dust sampling.
Test Set-ups:
- Use of gypsum blocks mounted on an inclined A-support for mineral dust testing.
- Bench mounting for wood sanding tests with humidity controls.
- Parquet floor test area and frames for floor sanding exposure assessment.
Instrumentation and Reporting:
- Dust collection via extraction units with weighing to determine dust quantity.
- Detailed reporting on test parameters including material types, hardness, and dust concentration values-especially respirable dust for mineral materials.
Practical Applications
Occupational Health Compliance: Employers and manufacturers utilize EN 50632-2-4 to evaluate sanding tools for airborne dust emissions that pose respiratory health risks, particularly in woodworking and construction industries.
Product Testing and Certification: Tool manufacturers apply this standard when designing or certifying sanders to demonstrate compliance with European health and safety requirements on dust emissions.
Safety Improvement: Helps in the development of effective dust extraction systems or operational practices to reduce worker exposure to hazardous dust.
Risk Assessment: Enables safety professionals to assess and document dust emission levels for different sanding operations, guiding workplace controls and personal protective equipment (PPE) recommendations.
Related Standards
EN 50632-1:2015: General requirements and procedures for dust measurement on electric motor-operated tools, serving as the base standard applicable alongside Part 2-4.
EN 50632-2-3: Dust measurement requirements specific to rotating disc-type sanders, differentiating from the non-disc sanders covered in EN 50632-2-4.
EN 481: Defines dust size fractions and terminology relevant to occupational exposure assessments (inhalable and respirable dust).
EN 12859:2011: Specifications for gypsum blocks used as a standard test material for mineral dust measurement in sanding tests.
Summary
The EN 50632-2-4:2016 standard serves as a critical reference for measuring and controlling dust emissions from electric motor-operated non-disc sanding tools. By establishing clear test conditions, instrumentation, and reporting protocols, it aids manufacturers and safety specialists in evaluating tool safety, improving worker protection, and ensuring compliance with health regulations in Europe.
