Overview
EN IEC 61300-2-2:2026 specifies the mating durability test methods for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. Developed by CLC and IEC, this international standard provides essential procedures for assessing the mechanical and optical performance of fibre optic connectors, adapters, and related passive components subjected to repeated cycles of mating and un-mating. The goal is to ensure reliable performance and durability of fibre optic connections in real-world applications.
Consistent application of mating durability tests is critical as fibre optic networks expand in complexity and scale. This standard helps manufacturers, network operators, and quality assurance professionals verify that devices can withstand the physical stress and potential degradation resulting from frequent handling and connector usage.
Key Topics
- Purpose of Mating Durability Testing: Evaluates the effects of repeated mating/un-mating on optical and mechanical performance of components under typical conditions.
- Test Configurations: Includes both plug-adapter-plug and plug-socket connector arrangements, reflecting common use cases in fibre optic infrastructure.
- Test Apparatus and Conditions: Specifies appropriate fixtures, manual or alternative force application methods, and measurement protocols.
- Measurement of Performance: Attenuation and return loss are monitored throughout cycles using equipment as per IEC 61300-3-3.
- Cleaning and Inspection Criteria: Provides guidance on connector inspection, cleaning intervals, and procedures during testing (referencing IEC TR 62627-01).
- Severity Levels: Introduces performance categories with defined test cycles for connectors and passive components, including hardened connectors.
- Reporting Requirements: Outlines essential reporting elements, such as coupling mechanisms, severity level, initial and final performance, cleaning occurrences, and deviations from standard procedures.
Applications
EN IEC 61300-2-2:2026 is particularly valuable in:
- Fibre Optic Component Manufacturing: Ensures products meet required durability and performance benchmarks, supporting quality control and market acceptance.
- Telecom and Data Network Deployment: Assists installers and operators in selecting connectors proven to endure repeated handling without compromising network reliability.
- Compliance and Testing Laboratories: Enables verification processes according to internationally recognized standards, enhancing credibility for tested products.
- R&D and Product Development: Guides engineers in the design and evaluation of new connector types and passive components to ensure robust long-term field performance.
Implementing this standard in product testing protocols minimizes the risk of network downtime and costly connector failures.
Related Standards
For comprehensive fibre optic component evaluation, EN IEC 61300-2-2:2026 should be considered alongside:
- IEC 61300-3-1: Visual examination of fibre optic connectors and components.
- IEC 61300-3-3: Procedures for monitoring changes in attenuation and return loss.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible f
