Overview

EN 60335-2-4:2010/A2:2019 is a European safety standard specifically targeting household and similar electrical appliances, focusing on the particular requirements for spin extractors (centrifuges). This amendment updates the original EN 60335-2-4:2010 standard in alignment with IEC 60335-2-4:2008/A2:2017, ensuring harmonized safety compliance across CENELEC member countries.

Issued by the CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) and implemented as a national standard by member states, this document serves as a critical reference for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and regulatory bodies involved in the design, manufacture, and certification of spin extractors used in domestic environments.

Key Topics

  • Safety Requirements for Spin Extractors:
EN 60335-2-4:2010/A2:2019 outlines detailed safety measures addressing mechanical hazards, electrical protection, and operational risks unique to spin extractors.

  • Moisture Resistance Testing:
The amendment revises moisture resistance procedures, including testing with saturated textile materials and water ingress simulation to verify appliance durability and operator safety under wet conditions.

  • Harmonization with Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU):
Compliance with this standard confers presumptive conformity with relevant safety objectives of the EU Low Voltage Directive, simplifying market access and regulatory acceptance.

  • Normative and Informative Annexes:
The standard includes normative references and informal annexes that discuss relationships to broader electrotechnical standards (e.g., EN 60335-1 series) and legal directives.

  • Transitional Recommendations:
Manufacturers and test organizations are advised to adopt the amended requirements within a transitional period (often 12 to 36 months) to ensure smooth integration without disruption.

Applications

EN 60335-2-4:2010/A2:2019 is essential for:

  • Manufacturers of Spin Extractors and Centrifuges:
To design and produce appliances meeting rigorous European safety expectations and ensure product reliability and consumer safety.

  • Testing and Certification Bodies:
For conducting compliance assessments, safety testing, and issuing certifications aligned with recognized harmonized standards.

  • Regulators and Market Surveillance Authorities:
To enforce electrical safety legislation and harmonized market standards across the European Economic Area (EEA).

  • Product Development and Quality Assurance Teams:
For integrating safety-centric design and testing methodologies in the development lifecycle of laundry appliances, specifically spin extractors.

Related Standards

  • EN 60335-1:
General requirements for the safety of household and similar electrical appliances, which forms the foundation and framework for all Part 2 series standards.

  • IEC 60335-2-4:
International counterpart providing globally recognized safety requirements for spin extractors, forming the base for European amendments.

  • EN 60730-2-12:
Covers automatic electrical controls for household and similar use, which may be integrated into spin extractor designs.

  • Directive 2014/35/EU (Low Voltage Directive):
Legal framework ensuring that electrical equipment designed for use within certain voltage limits meets essential health and safety requirements.
