(Amendment)Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-48: Particular requirements for commercial electric grillers and toasters
- Abstract
his European Standard deals with the safety of electrically operated commercial grillers and toasters not intended for household use. The rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances connected between one phase and neutral, and 480 V for other appliances. Rotary or continuous grillers and toasters and similar appliances intended for grilling by radiant heat such as rotisseries, salamanders, etc. are within the scope of this standard. Appliances within the scope of this standard are typically used in restaurants, canteens, hospitals and commercial enterprises such as bakeries, butcheries, etc.

prEN IEC 60335-2-48:2026/prA1:2026 is a CENELEC draft amendment for the safety of commercial electric grillers and toasters. It modifies the European standard for electrically operated appliances not intended for household use, including rotary or continuous grillers, toasters and similar radiant-heat appliances used in food-service and other commercial settings.
This amendment is read with prEN IEC 60335-2-48:2026 and prEN IEC 60335-2-48:2026/prAA:2026. In practice, it is the document that updates the safety wording for designers, manufacturers, test laboratories, certification bodies and buyers of these appliances.
What does prEN IEC 60335-2-48:2026/prA1:2026 specify?
prEN IEC 60335-2-48:2026/prA1:2026 specifies draft changes to the safety requirements for commercial electric grillers and toasters. The scope covers appliances with rated voltage up to 250 V for single-phase appliances connected between one phase and neutral, and up to 480 V for other appliances.
The amendment keeps the focus on commercial use, including appliances for grilling by radiant heat such as rotisseries and salamanders. It is organized as changes to Clause 1, Clause 3, Clause 6, Clause 7, Clause 11, Clause 12, Clause 18 and Clause 20, plus Annex B.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex B | Battery-operated appliances, separable batteries and detachable batteries for battery-operated appliances - deleted so Part 1 applies without modification |
What are the key requirements of prEN IEC 60335-2-48:2026/prA1:2026?
The amendment changes how the appliances are described, marked, tested and mechanically protected. For a manufacturer or buyer, the practical effect is that the intended use, warnings, surface temperatures and guarding have to match the commercial environment stated in the standard.
Intended use and scope
Clause 1 revises the description of who may use these appliances and where. The appliances are for commercial food processing by experts or instructed persons in non-public areas, and also by laypersons in areas open to the public such as hotel/motel common areas, canteens and self-service restaurants. In practice, the user environment and instructions matter, not just the appliance type.
Classification and instructions
Clause 6.2 adds a limit tied to toasters intended for use in a commercial kitchen. Clause 7.12 requires the instructions for toasters without at least IPX3 protection to carry a warning that they shall not be used in commercial kitchens. In practice, suppliers need to check both the ingress protection marking and the wording of the user instructions.
Heating and accessible surfaces
Clause 11.8 adds a note linking the temperature-rise limits for handles, knobs, grips, keyboards, keypads and similar parts to Table 3. It also allows certain external accessible surfaces near adjacent appliance surfaces to exceed the stated limits by up to 25 K if the relevant part is marked with IEC 60417-5041 (2002-10) or equivalent text. In practice, this affects test reporting and the marking shown to users.
Batteries and endurance
Clause 12 states that the Part 1 clause on charging of metal-ion batteries applies. Clause 18 states that the Part 1 endurance clause is not applicable. For a reader, that means battery-related charging is handled through Part 1, while endurance is not treated under this part.
Mechanical protection
Clause 20.2 requires protective enclosures, guards and similar parts to be non-detachable parts or to be interlocked, and to have adequate mechanical strength. In practice, guards must stay effective during use and cleaning, or stop the appliance safely when opened.
What terms does prEN IEC 60335-2-48:2026/prA1:2026 define?
- CENELEC - The European electrotechnical standardization body that issues the draft amendment.
- IEC - The International Electrotechnical Commission, whose text this amendment follows.
- prA1 - Draft Amendment 1, meaning this document updates the base European standard.
- IPX3 - The ingress protection level used here as the threshold for the toaster warning in the instructions.
- metal-ion batteries - Battery technology covered by Clause 12 for charging-related safety requirements.
- instructed persons - People trained or directed to use the appliance for commercial food processing.
- laypersons - Users without specialist training, allowed in certain public commercial areas by the scope wording.
- non-detachable parts - Parts that are not meant to be removed, used here for guards and protective enclosures.
Who uses prEN IEC 60335-2-48:2026/prA1:2026?
prEN IEC 60335-2-48:2026/prA1:2026 is used by manufacturers, product designers, test laboratories, certification bodies and procurement teams that deal with commercial kitchen equipment. It is also relevant to operators in restaurants, canteens, hospitals, bakeries, butcheries, hotel/motel common areas and self-service restaurants.
These users apply it when they specify a product, write instructions, test temperature rise and guarding, or check whether a toaster or griller is suitable for the intended workplace.
What changed in prEN IEC 60335-2-48:2026/prA1:2026 from the previous edition?
prEN IEC 60335-2-48:2026/prA1:2026 is the CENELEC draft text based on IEC 60335-2-48:2021/AMD1:2025. The changes stated in the document touch the scope, a definition in Clause 3.1.9, classification, marking and instructions, heating, charging of metal-ion batteries, endurance, stability and mechanical hazards, and Annex B.
The amendment also adds the commercial-kitchen warning for certain toasters, adjusts the surface-temperature note and footnote handling in Clause 11, and deletes Annex B so Part 1 applies without modification.
Which standards are used with prEN IEC 60335-2-48:2026/prA1:2026?
- prEN IEC 60335-2-48:2026 - The base European standard that this amendment modifies.
- prEN IEC 60335-2-48:2026/prAA:2026 - A companion draft that is read together with this amendment.
- Part 1 - The general safety requirements referenced for charging of metal-ion batteries and, after Annex B is deleted, for battery-related treatment without modification.
- IEC 60417-5041 (2002-10) - The symbol referenced for marking when the temperature-rise exception is used.
What does the prEN IEC 60335-2-48:2026/prA1:2026 document contain?
This amendment contains revised clause text for scope, definitions, classification, marking and instructions, heating, battery charging, endurance, and mechanical hazards. It also contains note and footnote changes for Tables 101 and 102, and a reference to Figure 102 for the adjacent-surface temperature-rise case.
The practical value of the document is in its test and marking language: it tells users what warning text to include, how to treat certain surfaces in heating tests, and how to handle guards and battery-related provisions. Annex B is removed, so the battery treatment follows Part 1 instead of a separate annex path.
