Fire hazard testing - Part 11-4: Test flames - 50 W flame - Apparatus and confirmational test method

IEC 60695-11-4:2011 provides a description of the apparatus required to produce a 50 W test flame and a description of a calibration procedure to check that the test flame produced meets given requirements. Guidance on confirmatory tests for test flames is given in IEC 60695-11-40. This first edition of IEC 60695-11-4 cancels and replaces the second edition of technical specification IEC/TS 60695-11-4 published in 2004. It constitutes a technical revision. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are the integration of minor editorial and technical changes throughout the text. It has the status of a basic safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51.

La CEI 60695-11-4:2011 donne les exigences détaillées pour la production d'une flamme d'essai de 50 W (valeur nominale), de type à pré mélange, d'une hauteur totale de 20 mm approximativement. Des détails sont donnés four la confirmation de la flamme d'essai. Des informations sur la confirmation d'une flamme d'essai figurent dans la CEI 60695-11-40. Cette première édition de la CEI 60695-11-4 annule et remplace la seconde édition de la Spécification Technique CEI/TS 60695-11-4 publiée en 2004. Elle constitue une révision technique. Par rapport à la précédente édition, le principal changement est l'intégration de modifications éditoriales et techniques mineures dans tout le texte. Elle a le statut de publication fondamentale de sécurité conformément au Guide 104 de la CEI et au Guide 51 de l'ISO/CEI.

This part of IEC 60695 specifies the glow-wire apparatus and common test procedure to simulate the effects of thermal stresses which may be produced by heat sources such as glowing elements or overloaded resistors, for short periods, in order to assess the fire hazard by a simulation technique. The test procedure described in this document is a common test procedure intended for the small-scale tests in which a standardized electrically heated wire is used as a source of ignition. It is a common part of the test procedures applied to end products and to solid electrical insulating materials or other solid combustible materials. GWFI is the highest temperature, determined during this standardized procedure, at which the tested material does not ignite or, if it does, extinguishes within 30 s after removal of the glow-wire and is not totally consumed; and molten drips, if they occur, do not ignite the wrapping tissue. This test method is a materials test carried out on a series of standard test specimens. The data obtained, along with data from the glow-wire ignition temperature (GWIT) test method for materials, IEC 60695-2-13, can then be used in a preselection process in accordance with IEC 60695-1-30 [4] to judge the ability of materials to meet the requirements of IEC 60695-2-11. NOTE As an outcome of conducting a fire hazard assessment, an appropriate series of preselection flammability and ignition tests can allow a reduction of end product testing. This basic safety publication focusing on safety test method(s) is primarily intended for use by technical committees in the preparation of safety publications in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51. Specifies a needle-flame test to simulate the effect of a small flame which may result from fault conditions, in order to assess by a simulation technique the fire hazard. It is applicable to electrotechnical equipment, its sub-assemblies and components and to solid electrical insulating materials or other combustible materials. This first edition of EN 60695-11-5 cancels and replaces the second edition of EN 60695-2-2, issued in 1991 and its amendment 1 (1994). It also constitutes a technical revision. The structure of this standard remains essentially the same with some major new changes and concepts added: - The scope has been broadened to allow this test method to also simulate the effects of small flames from outside the equipment. - A new concept has been added which allows the burner to be moved during the test to avoid dripping material from falling onto the tip of the burner tube. - The burner tube material is now a referenced source. - The reference for the copper block material has changed - the ISO publication (ISO 1337) has been withdrawn with no replacement. A new callout is now used. - Informative Annex B and a bibliography have been added. It has the status of a basic safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104.
