Overview
EN 60335-2-59:2003/A2:2009 is a European standard developed under the CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) that specifies particular safety requirements for household and similar electrical insect killers. This standard is part of the broader IEC 60335 series focused on the safety of household electrical appliances. The 2009 Amendment 2 updates the original 2003 edition to address evolving safety and regulatory needs.
This standard plays a critical role in ensuring the safety of insect killers used in domestic and commercial environments, especially concerning electrical hazards, radiation exposure, and user instructions. It aligns harmoniously with the general IEC 60335-1 safety requirements for household appliances while outlining specific provisions for insect-killing devices.
Key Topics
Safety Requirements for Insect Killers
EN 60335-2-59 defines targeted safety protocols to mitigate risks associated with insect killers, including electrical safety, toxicity, and exposure to ultraviolet radiation.User Protection
The standard explicitly considers vulnerable users such as children or persons with reduced sensory, physical, or mental capabilities, mandating design and instructional requirements to prevent misuse or accidents.Lamp Replacement Warning
Appliances with lamps that cannot be replaced without damaging the device must bear clear markings advising users to discard the appliance when lamps fail, mitigating hazards from improper repairs.Radiation and Toxicity Controls
Detailed requirements govern radiation emission levels and toxic substances within insect killers, using weighted irradiance formulas to guarantee safe exposure limits.Marking and Instructions
Clear labeling and detailed user manuals are required, ensuring users are aware of specific hazards and proper appliance handling to maintain safety throughout the product’s lifecycle.Integration with General Standards
The standard supplements and modifies the general safety clauses in IEC 60335-1, ensuring consistency across the appliance product family and prioritizing specific requirements over generic ones.
Applications
EN 60335-2-59/A2 is essential for a variety of stakeholders including:
Manufacturers of Electrical Insect Killers
Guidelines to design and produce safe devices compliant with European safety norms, helping reduce liability and enhance product reliability.Testing and Certification Bodies
Provides a clear framework for assessing compliance with electrical safety, radiation, and user protection standards specific to insect killers.Importers and Retailers
Assurance that only compliant insect killing devices are marketed within the European Union and other regions adopting CENELEC standards, ensuring consumer safety.End Users
Consumers and commercial operators benefit from the standard’s emphasis on clear instructions and warnings, enhancing safe usage, especially in homes with children or vulnerable individuals.
