EN IEC 62841-3-15:2026/A11:2026 is a CENELEC amendment to the European standard for transportable magnetic drills. It updates the safety requirements in EN IEC 62841-3-15:2026, which is used with EN 62841-1, and it adds European references and a relationship to Directive 2006/42/EC. In practice, it is for manufacturers, test laboratories, and conformity teams working on transportable magnetic drills and their battery-related safety features.

What does EN IEC 62841-3-15:2026/A11:2026 specify?

EN IEC 62841-3-15:2026/A11:2026 specifies common European modifications to EN IEC 62841-3-15:2026 for transportable magnetic drills. The amendment updates the scope, abnormal operation, construction, supply cords, noise and vibration measurements, battery-tool provisions, and the links to European and EU references.

The document is organized as a short amendment with:

  • Clause 1, Scope
  • Clause 18, Abnormal operation
  • Clause 21, Construction
  • Clause 24, Supply connection and external flexible cables and cords
  • Annex I, Measurement of noise and vibration emissions
  • Annex K, Battery tools and battery packs
  • Annex L, Battery tools and battery packs provided with mains connection or non-isolated sources
  • Annex ZA, Normative references to international publications with their corresponding European publications
  • Annex ZZ, Relationship between this European Standard and the essential requirements of Directive 2006/42/EC aimed to be covered

KBattery tools and battery packs
LBattery tools and battery packs with mains connection or non-isolated sources
ZANormative references and their European publications
ZZRelationship to Directive 2006/42/EC

What are the key requirements of EN IEC 62841-3-15:2026/A11:2026?

EN IEC 62841-3-15:2026/A11:2026 focuses on restart prevention, supply-cord robustness, battery safety, and repeatable noise testing. It also tightens the way the standard is linked to EU machinery legislation, which matters when the standard is used for product conformity work.

Restart behavior and abnormal operation

Clause 21 replaces the restart requirement so the drill unit shall not restart after a mains interruption unless the operator releases and re-actuates the power switch. Reactivation of an electromagnet after a mains interruption is still permitted. In practice, this means the tool must not come back on unexpectedly when power returns.

Clause 18 links abnormal-operation testing to that same restart-prevention requirement. For a manufacturer, this means the restart function must be checked both as a construction feature and as part of the abnormal-operation assessment.

Supply cords and external flexible cables

Clause 24.4 replaces the supply-cord requirement with a minimum cord type equivalent to heavy polychloroprene- or PUR-sheathed flexible cord, such as 60245 IEC 66, H07RN-F, or H07BQ-F. Compliance is checked by inspection and measurement. This matters because the cord must withstand the handling and environmental demands of transportable tools.

Noise and vibration measurement

Annex I is made normative and gives the measurement setup for noise and vibration emissions. It fixes the microphone position, tool orientation, steel-plate mounting, and the condition that no tool bit is fitted during the test. For users of the standard, this means emission data are measured in a controlled and comparable way.

Battery-tool safety

Annex K and Annex L add requirements for tools with integral batteries and for tools with mains connection or non-isolated sources. The document requires either an isolation device or a disabling device to prevent injury or unintentional starting, and the isolation device must disconnect at least one pole, show its state clearly, and prevent accidental reconnection. The battery shall not be relied upon to energize the magnetic means.

For tools in Annex L, restart prevention also applies after installing a separable or detachable battery pack. In practice, this addresses both servicing safety and unintended start-up after power or battery changes.

EU machinery relationship

Annex ZZ maps clauses of the standard to the essential requirements of Directive 2006/42/EC. This helps conformity teams see which clauses support machinery-safety claims for transportable magnetic drills.

What does EN IEC 62841-3-15:2026/A11:2026 change from the previous edition?

EN IEC 62841-3-15:2026/A11:2026 modifies EN IEC 62841-3-15:2026 by adding or replacing text in Clause 1, Clause 18, Clause 21, Clause 24, Annex I, Annex K, Annex L, Annex ZA, and Annex ZZ. The amendment adds the scope sentence on significant hazards, strengthens restart prevention, updates the supply-cord requirement, makes Annex I normative, adds battery isolation and disabling provisions, and adds the European reference and EU-relationship annexes.

Which standards are used with EN IEC 62841-3-15:2026/A11:2026?

EN IEC 62841-3-15:2026/A11:2026 is used with EN 62841-1:2015 and its amendments and corrigenda. Part 3-15 supplements or modifies the general requirements in Part 1, so the two parts are read together.

Annex ZA also names:

  • IEC 62841-1:2014, with EN 62841-1:2015 + AC 2015 + A11 2022 + A1 2025
  • ISO 630-2:2021, Structural steels - Part 2: Technical delivery conditions for structural steels for general purposes

EN ISO 12100 is also referenced as the overall framework followed by the document, which matters because it places the tool-specific requirements within a general risk-reduction approach.

What does the EN IEC 62841-3-15:2026/A11:2026 document contain?

EN IEC 62841-3-15:2026/A11:2026 contains replacement text for several clauses and annexes rather than a full reissue of the base standard. It includes a revised scope statement, restart-prevention text, a supply-cord requirement, and test details for noise and vibration measurement.

The document also contains a normative annex on battery-tool isolation and disabling devices, a normative annex of European references, and an informative annex that maps the standard to Directive 2006/42/EC. For engineering and compliance teams, the most useful parts are the replacement clauses, Table I.101 for test conditions, and Table ZZ.1 for directive correspondence.

amendments and corrigenda (if any), so as to convert it into the European Standard: Particular requirements
for transportable magnetic drills.
Where a particular subclause of Part 1 is not mentioned in the Part 3-15, that subclause applies as far as
relevant. When this document states “addition”, “modification” or “replacement”, the relevant text in Part 1 is to
be adapted accordingly.
The following print types are used:

— notes: in smaller roman type.
The terms defined in Clause 3 are printed in bold typeface.
Subclauses, notes, tables and figures which are additional to those in Part 1 are numbered starting from 101.
Clauses, subclauses, notes, tables, figures and annexes which are additional to those in IEC 62841-3-15:2024
are prefixed “Z”.
This document follows the overall requirements of EN ISO 12100.
This document has been prepared under a standardization request given to CENELEC by the European
Commission. The Standing Committee of the EFTA States subsequently approves these requests for its
members.
For the relationship with EU Legislation, see informative Annex ZZ, which is an integral part of this document.
Compliance with the clauses of Part 1 together with Part 3-15 provides one means of conforming with the
essential health and safety requirements of the Directive concerned.
Any feedback and questions on this document should be directed to the users’ national committee. A complete
listing of these bodies can be found on the CENELEC website.
