General Information

Abstract

IEC 60317-33:2015(E) specifies the requirements of polyester glass fibre wound, impregnated, bare or enamelled rectangular copper winding wire, temperature index 200. The range of nominal conductor dimensions covered by this standard is: - width: min 2,0 mm max 16,0 mm; - thickness: min 0,80 mm max 5,60 mm. The specified combinations of width and thickness as well as the specified width/thickness ratio are according to IEC 60317-0-4. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1990, Amendment 1:1997 and Amendment 2:2005. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - new 3.2.2 containing general notes on winding wire, formerly part of the scope; - introduction of glass fibre coverings over grade 1 enamelled conductor in 3.2.2; - revision to references to IEC 60317-0-4 to make clear that their application is normative. Keywords: temperature index 200, winding wire

Overview

EN 60317-33:2016 (IEC 60317-33:2015) specifies requirements for glass fibre wound, resin- or varnish-impregnated, bare or enamelled rectangular copper winding wire with a temperature index 200. This CLC/CENELEC adoption of the IEC standard is a technical revision to the earlier edition and applies where high thermal endurance and mechanical stability from a glass-fibre covering are required.

Key facts:

  • Applies to polyester glass-fibre wound rectangular copper wire, impregnated, bare or enamelled.
  • Enamelled wire and impregnating systems must provide a temperature index of at least 200.
  • Impregnating agent applied to the glass fibre shall contain silicone with minimum temperature index 200.
  • Nominal conductor dimensions covered: width 2.0 mm – 16.0 mm; thickness 0.80 mm – 5.60 mm.
  • Specified width/thickness combinations are normatively referenced to IEC 60317-0-4.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Temperature index and materials
    • Enamelled conductor and glass-fibre impregnation must meet a temperature index 200 requirement.
    • Silicone-containing impregnating agents are specified for the glass covering.
  • Covering grades
    • GL1: one glass fibre covering over bare conductor.
    • GL2: two glass fibre coverings over bare conductor.
    • Variants also defined for grade 1 and grade 2 enamelled conductors (e.g., grade 1 GL1, grade 2 GL2).
  • Dimensions and geometry
    • Conductor width and thickness ranges are defined; allowable combinations and width/thickness ratios follow IEC 60317-0-4.
  • Testing and conformity
    • Many performance clauses (resistance, elongation, flexibility, dielectric tests, solderability, etc.) refer to IEC 60317-0-4 for methods and limits.
    • Some tests are marked inappropriate for this wire type (e.g., heat shock, cut-through, resistance to abrasion).
  • Packaging
    • Packaging requirements are included (see clause on packaging) and intended to preserve wire quality during storage and transport.

Applications

  • Insulation and conductor specification for:
    • Power and distribution transformers
    • High-temperature motors and generators
    • Reactors, inductors and specialty windings requiring glass-fibre insulation
  • Use where high thermal index (200) and chemical resistance from silicone-impregnated glass coverings are needed.

Who Uses This Standard

  • Winding wire manufacturers and suppliers
  • Electrical equipment designers and OEMs (transformers, motors)
  • Procurement/specification engineers
  • Test laboratories and compliance bodies
  • Standards and quality managers ensuring material conformity

Related Standards
