ISO/IEC 29341-9-10:2008(E) defines a front panel by registering a control point for a specific user interaction. The external activity service allows the service to control its resources by enabling limited registrations. It also interacts with an associated scan service to address contention issues after a user interaction has occurred. The series of ISO/IEC 29341 publications defines an architecture for pervasive peer-to-peer network connectivity of intelligent appliances, wireless devices and PCs. It is designed to bring easy to use, flexible, standards-based connectivity to ad-hoc or unmanaged networks whether in the home, in a small business, public spaces or attached to the Internet.

Overview

ISO/IEC 29341-9-10:2008 - Information technology - UPnP Device Architecture - Part 9-10: Imaging Device Control Protocol - External Activity Service defines a UPnP service template for representing a device front‑panel interaction. It is compliant with the UPnP Device Architecture v1.0 and specifies how an imaging device (printer, scanner or multifunction device) can register a control point for limited, time‑bound user interactions and coordinate with an associated Scan service to avoid resource contention.

Keywords: ISO/IEC 29341-9-10:2008, UPnP External Activity Service, Imaging Device Control Protocol, UPnP Device Architecture, front panel, control point.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Service type: urn:schemas‑upnp‑org:service:ExternalActivity:1 - the canonical identifier for the External Activity Service.
  • Service State Table (SST) - defines state variables used by the service, including:
    • Activity
    • AvailableRegistrations (read‑only)
    • DisplayString and DisplayStringSize
    • ButtonName
    • Duration
    • RegistrationID
  • Actions - core operations defined in the standard include:
    • Register - request a registration for a front‑panel interaction
    • Renew - extend an existing registration
    • Unregister - cancel a registration
  • Eventing and moderation - the service supports UPnP eventing for state changes and includes moderation behavior to manage multiple registrations and limited resources.
  • Interactions with Scan service - the External Activity Service specifies coordination with an associated Scan service to address contention after a user interaction (for example, preventing simultaneous use of a scanner from two different control points).
  • XML service description & testing - the standard provides an XML service description template and outlines syntax testing scenarios (Register/Renew/Unregister tests) to validate implementations.

Practical applications

  • Enables front‑panel buttons or user interactions on imaging devices to be exposed to network control points (PCs, mobile apps, kiosks).
  • Supports scenarios such as “scan-to-PC” initiated from a device front panel while ensuring the scan resource is reserved and contention is avoided.
  • Useful for consumer/home, small business, public spaces and managed/unmanaged networks where ad‑hoc UPnP discovery and control is required.
  • Helps manufacturers implement interoperable UPnP imaging features and helps integrators and application developers build control software that reliably interacts with device front panels.

Who should use this standard

  • Device manufacturers (printers, scanners, MFPs) implementing UPnP imaging services and front‑panel integration.
  • Firmware and driver developers who implement UPnP service stacks.
  • Systems integrators and application developers creating control points or mobile/PC apps for imaging devices.
  • QA/test engineers validating UPnP service conformance and interoperability.

Related standards

  • ISO/IEC 29341 series (UPnP Device Architecture) - e.g., Printer (29341‑9‑1), Scanner (29341‑9‑2), Scan service (29341‑9‑13), and other UPnP service/device parts that define complementary imaging and network behaviors.

For implementers, this standard provides the service model, state variables, actions and testing guidance needed to add standardized front‑panel registration and coordination to UPnP imaging devices.

FOREWORD
1) ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) form
the specialized system for worldwide standardization. National bodies that are members of ISO or IEC
participate in the development of International Standards. Their preparation is entrusted to technical
committees; any ISO and IEC member body interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this
preparatory work. International governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with ISO and IEC
also participate in this preparation.
2) In the field of information technology, ISO and IEC have established a joint technical committee, ISO/IEC JTC
1. Draft International Standards adopted by the joint technical committee are circulated to national bodies for
voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the national bodies
casting a vote.
3) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC and ISO on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested IEC and ISO member bodies.
4) IEC, ISO and ISO/IEC publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted
by IEC and ISO member bodies in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the
technical content of IEC, ISO and ISO/IEC publications is accurate, IEC or ISO cannot be held responsible for
the way in which they are used or for any misinterpretation by any end user.
5) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC and ISO member bodies undertake to apply IEC, ISO and
ISO/IEC publications transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications.
Any divergence between any ISO/IEC publication and the corresponding national or regional publication should
be clearly indicated in the latter.
6) ISO and IEC provide no marking procedure to indicate their approval and cannot be rendered responsible for
any equipment declared to be in conformity with an ISO/IEC publication.
7) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
8) No liability shall attach to IEC or ISO or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual
experts and members of their technical committees and IEC or ISO member bodies for any personal injury,
property damage or other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including
legal fees) and expenses arising out of the publication of, use of, or reliance upon, this ISO/IEC publication or
any other IEC, ISO or ISO/IEC publications.
9) Attention is drawn to the normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
IEC and ISO draw attention to the fact that it is claimed that compliance with this document may involve the use of
patents as indicated below.
ISO and IEC take no position concerning the evidence, validity and scope of the putative patent rights. The holders
of the putative patent rights have assured IEC and ISO that they are willing to negotiate free licences or licences
under reasonable and non-discriminatory terms and conditions with applicants throughout the world. In this respect,
the statements of the holders of the putative patent rights are registered with IEC and ISO.

1. Overview and Scope
This service definition is compliant with the UPnP Device Architecture version 1.0.
• This service represents a front-panel by registering a control point for a specific user interaction. It allows
the service to control its resources by enabling limited registrations. It also interacts with an associated Scan
service to address contention issues after a user interaction has occurred.

2. Service Modeling Definitions
2.1. ServiceType
The following service type identifies a service that is compliant with this template:

R = Required, O = Optional, X = Non-standard.
Values listed in this column are required. To specify standard optional values or to delegate assignment of
values to the vendor, you must reference a specific instance of an appropriate table below.
2.2.1. Activity
A string that reflects the most recent activity (possibly a button press, an activity such as a motion sensor, etc.).
This string contains a concatenation of the ButtonName value, the DisplayString value, and a sequence number
as shown in the example below. Vendor specific information may be included after the sequence number if
needed.
;;<;optional vendor specific information>
ScanButton;John Jones;11234;Scanner at NW entrance
The separate parts of the string are each separated by a semicolon (;). The concatenation of the two values solves
a race that occurs when two evented variables change simultaneously. UPnP does not specify if the events will
arrive together, or if separately, which order they will arrive in. The sequence value is meaningless and it should
be ignored. It simply ensures that an event will occur even if the same button is pressed two times sequentially.
2.2.2. AvailableRegistrations
The AvailableRegistrations value indicates whether the ExternalActivity service is currently able to accept
registrations or not. This value is TRUE (1) when the service is able to successfully execute the Register action.
