Overview
IEC 60086-2:2000/AMD2:2004 is Amendment 2 to the widely recognized international standard, Primary batteries – Part 2: Physical and electrical specifications. This amendment, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), provides updated requirements and clarifications on the physical dimensions, configurations, and electrical performance characteristics of primary (non-rechargeable) batteries. It ensures global compatibility and safety of battery-powered applications across various industries, supporting producers, designers, and end-users in maintaining consistency and reliability.
Key Topics
Battery Types and Categories: The specification covers a broad range of primary batteries, including cylindrical, prismatic, and coin/button cells.
- Categories address different shapes and applications, e.g., round batteries (zinc carbon, alkaline, lithium, silver oxide, zinc air, etc.) and non-round batteries.
- Includes designations such as R1, LR6 (AA), LR14 (C), LR20 (D), CR14250, CR15H270, PR70, SR44, 4LR44, and many more.
Physical Specifications:
- Defines precise dimension requirements (diameter, height, tolerances) for each battery type and designation.
- Details on allowable dimensional variations to ensure interchangeability and proper fitting in equipment.
- Drawings and gauges for conformity testing.
Electrical Specifications:
- Standardized initial voltage, discharge conditions, and minimum average duration (MAD) for various battery chemistries and formats.
- Service output tests to measure battery performance under standard and pulse load conditions.
- Delayed discharge performance metrics after storage (e.g., performance retention after 12 months).
Product Marking and Identification:
- Stipulates requirements for clear and legible battery markings, supporting battery traceability and safety.
- Specifics on terminal configuration, insulation, and contact resistance.
Cross-references and Compatibility:
- Indexes and tables for cross-referencing batteries with similar form factors but differing chemistries, supporting comparison and substitution.
Applications
The IEC 60086-2:2000/AMD2:2004 amendment underpins quality, reliability, and interoperability for a broad spectrum of battery-powered devices. Example applications include:
- Consumer Electronics: Radios, remote controls, portable lighting, electronic games, hearing aids, and cameras.
- Medical Devices: Hearing aids and medical monitoring equipment use button and coin cell batteries, benefiting from exacting size and performance standards.
- Industrial and Professional Equipment: Measuring instruments, security systems, and smoke detectors rely on consistent battery performance and fit.
- Emerging Technologies: Standardized battery sizes enable new products to benefit from existing, widely available battery formats.
Related Standards
- IEC 60086-1 – Primary batteries – General: Core definitions, safety requirements, and general test conditions.
- IEC 60086-3 – Primary batteries – Watch batteries: Specialized requirements for small format batteries used in timepieces.
- IEC 60086-4 – Primary lithium batteries: Focused on lithium chemistries, addressing hazards and safety-specific requirements.
- Other IEC Battery Standards: Associated documentation covers environmental aspects, labeling, and performance evaluations.
Practical Value
Implementing the specifications from IEC 60086-2:2000/AMD2:2004 supports:
- Product Safety and Reliability: Ensures batteries meet international expectations for fit, function, and durability.
- Global Compatibility: Facilitates international trade by standardizing battery sizes and performance criteria.
- Design and Manufacturing Consistency: Assists product designers and manufacturers in selecting suitable battery types, reducing errors and recalls.
- User Experience Enhancement: Consumers benefit from predictable battery replacement and device performance.
By aligning products with IEC 60086-2, manufacturers and users ensure optimal battery quality, compatibility, and dependability in virtually all sectors relying on primary battery power.
