ISO/IEC 11801-6:2017/AMD1:2026 is an IEC and ISO/IEC amendment to the generic cabling standard for customer premises, focused on distributed building services. It updates how Type A and Type B cabling are structured, how single pair extensions are used, and how related components and tests are applied. The document is aimed at designers, installers, testers, and buyers who need to specify or verify cabling for building services.
What does ISO/IEC 11801-6:2017/AMD1:2026 specify?
ISO/IEC 11801-6:2017/AMD1:2026 specifies amendments to Part 6 of the customer-premises generic cabling series for distributed building services. It refines the use of Type A and Type B generic cabling, updates references to ISO/IEC 11801-1, and adds rules for single pair extensions, component choice, testing, and supporting annex guidance.
The amendment is organized by clause updates to the core technical model and by targeted changes to Annex A and Annex C. The main topics are stand-alone structure, transmission performance, balanced cabling, component selection, connecting hardware, and cords.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Overview for calculating the number of SOs per room or service area |
| Annex C | Connecting hardware guidance |
What are the key requirements of ISO/IEC 11801-6:2017/AMD1:2026?
ISO/IEC 11801-6:2017/AMD1:2026 keeps the split between Type A and Type B generic cabling and makes the boundary with application-specific cabling clearer. In practice, that helps designers decide where the generic cabling ends and where application-specific equipment or cabling begins.
- Type A structure - Type A generic cabling goes to the SO, and the amendment states that Type A cabling shall be 4-pair copper or optical fibre in accordance with ISO/IEC 11801-1. This matters because it fixes the permitted cabling media for that implementation.
- Type B structure - Type B generic cabling goes to the SCP. The amendment allows application-specific cabling and equipment beyond the SCP, but treats that part as outside the document’s scope, so the generic system boundary must be clear in design and procurement.
- Performance of Type A channels and links - Clause 5.6.2.1 points to Clause 6 for channel performance and Clause 7 for link performance. It also notes that links may be tested during commissioning or when faults are suspected, with further testing guidance in IEC 61935-1.
- Single pair extension for Type B - Clause 6.3.2.2 and Clause 7.2 allow single pair extensions between the SCP and TE using ISO/IEC 11801-1 components, with performance tied to Class T1-A-100 or Class T1-B depending on the base cabling class and component type. This is the key technical change for service distribution using single pair cabling.
- Balanced cabling performance - Service distribution cabling shall provide at least Class E link performance, and cable sharing brings extra crosstalk requirements from ISO/IEC 11801-1. In practice, the lowest-performing component governs the result, so mixed categories must be chosen carefully.
- Component choice and temperature - Clause 8.2.1.2 ties component category to minimum Class E performance and notes reduced channel lengths at higher operating temperatures. That means length and thermal conditions have to be checked together, not separately.
- Connecting hardware and cords - Clause 10 points back to the relevant ISO/IEC 11801-1 hardware clauses, and Clause 11 says pre-fabricated terminated balanced cords should be used for Type A and Type B cabling. For single pair extensions, cords shall conform to ISO/IEC 11801-1:2017/AMD1:2025, 11.6.
What terms does ISO/IEC 11801-6:2017/AMD1:2026 define?
- SO (service outlet) - The point where the service is made available at the room or service area.
- SCP (service connection point) - The point used in Type B cabling where generic cabling can transition to application-specific cabling or equipment.
- SD (service distribution) - The cabling segment that distributes the service within the building system.
- TE (terminal equipment) - The equipment at the end of the cabling path that receives the service.
- EQP (transmission equipment) - The equipment used as the transmission side reference in channel descriptions.
- Channel - The complete transmission path between equipment ends, including the relevant cords and cabling subsystems.
- Link - The installed cabling path that can be tested during commissioning or fault finding.
Who uses ISO/IEC 11801-6:2017/AMD1:2026?
ISO/IEC 11801-6:2017/AMD1:2026 is used by cabling designers, building systems integrators, installers, commissioning teams, and test technicians working on customer-premises networks for distributed building services. It is also relevant to quality managers and buyers who need to specify the cabling class, the allowed media, the testing method, or the hardware interfaces in a project.
What changed in ISO/IEC 11801-6:2017/AMD1:2026 from the previous edition?
ISO/IEC 11801-6:2017/AMD1:2026 updates the 2017 part with these changes:
- replaces the ISO/IEC 11801-1:2017 reference with ISO/IEC 11801-1:2017 and ISO/IEC 11801-1:2017/AMD1:2025
- clarifies the stand-alone structure for Type A and Type B generic cabling
- adds the Type A media requirement for 4-pair copper or optical fibre
- adds single pair extension rules, performance classes, length guidance, temperature adjustment, and a 0.75 A limit for the resulting channel
- revises balanced cabling component choice, cabling performance, connecting hardware, and cord requirements
- updates Annex A and Annex C references and adds testing and guidance references in the bibliography
Which standards are used with ISO/IEC 11801-6:2017/AMD1:2026?
- ISO/IEC 11801-1:2017 and ISO/IEC 11801-1:2017/AMD1:2025 - provide the general requirements, cabling classes, component rules, and related performance framework used throughout Part 6.
- IEC 61935-1 - gives testing requirements for installed balanced cabling.
- IEC 61935-4 - gives testing requirements for installed balanced single-pair cabling.
- ISO/IEC TR 11801-9911 - gives guidance on balanced single pair applications within a balanced 4-pair cabling system.
What does the ISO/IEC 11801-6:2017/AMD1:2026 document contain?
ISO/IEC 11801-6:2017/AMD1:2026 contains replacement text for core clauses on structure, performance, components, hardware, and cords. It also includes a new figure for Type B single pair extension and Table 4, which gives length equations and temperature corrections for service distribution channel planning.
The amendment also points readers to the relevant testing standards for commissioned cabling and fault detection. Annex A and Annex C are updated to align the overview for SO planning and the connecting hardware references with the amended cabling model.

Part 1: General requirements
ISO/IEC 11801-1:2017/AMD1:2025
5.2.1 Stand-alone structure
Replace the first two paragraphs with the following:
In addition to the functional elements specified in ISO/IEC 11801-1, this document specifies
two implementations of generic cabling for distributed building services. This document
specifies the use of the following.
– Type A generic cabling to the SO: the SO can be placed where the service is needed.
– Type B generic cabling to the SCP: the SCP should be placed where the service is needed,
thereby providing more flexibility in the cabling allowed between the SCP and the
telecommunication equipment. Type B provides the opportunity for
• application-specific cabling to be installed between the SCP and terminal equipment,
• application-specific equipment to be connected at the SCP,
• generic cabling to be installed between the SCP and the SO.
Any application-specific cabling and equipment beyond the SCP is outside the scope of this
document. This information is needed, as only the 1P option is generic.
5.3.1 Type A generic cabling
Add, after the first paragraph, the following new paragraph:
Type A generic cabling shall be 4-pair copper or optical fibre in accordance with
ISO/IEC 11801-1.
5.3.2 Type B generic cabling
Replace Figure 4 with the following new figure and footnote:
a
Application-specific cabling is generally out of scope of this document. However, extending Type B generic
cabling using single pair components of ISO/IEC 11801-1 would transform the cabling between the SCP and the
SO 1P into service distribution cabling. Single pair cabling is addressed in the following subclauses: 5.6.2.2,
6.3.2.2, 8.2.3.3, 10.2.2.3 and 11.2.2.
Figure 4 – Structure of Type B generic cabling (typical)
5.6.2.1 Type A generic cabling
Replace the existing three paragraphs with the following new paragraphs:
The transmission performance of Type A generic cabling is detailed in Clause 6 for channels
and in Clause 7 for links.
The channel is the transmission path between the transmission equipment (EQP in Figure 9)
and the terminal equipment. A typical channel consists of the service distribution cabling
subsystem together with service area and equipment cords. For longer reach services, the
channel is formed by the connection of two or more subsystems (including service area cords
and/or equipment cords).
Links may be tested either during commissioning or for the detection of faults that are suspected
in the cabling. Further informati
