Overview
ISO 4548-13:2023 specifies a standardized static burst pressure test for composite filter housings used in full‑flow lubricating oil filters for internal combustion engines. The method determines whether a filter can withstand a specified static pressure at high and low temperatures, identifies the burst pressure and records the failure mode. It applies to all oil filters (for example, spin‑on filters and temperature‑sensitive materials) and to both new filters and those returned from endurance tests.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test objective: Verify ability to withstand a specified static pressure objective, determine burst pressure and failure mode.
- Temperature range: Samples are tested by default between −20 °C and +130 °C (environmental chamber recommended).
- Test rig: Hydraulic hand pump or equivalent, high‑pressure tubing/valves, pressure sensor (0–3 000 kPa or higher if required), and adaptor for the filter. Safety shielding and continuous pressure recording are required.
- Fluid: Oil that functions between −20 °C and +130 °C (or agreed range); viscosity in test range 5 mm2/s to 10 000 mm2/s.
- Preparation: Assemble filter with recommended tightening torque/angle (apply minimum if tolerance given); purge air from system; maintain test temperature for at least 4 hours unless justified otherwise.
- Pressure procedure: Initial check at 200 kPa, then raise pressure in controlled ramps (approximately 100 kPa per 10 s with ~15 s checks) until the objective is reached or failure occurs. For burst determination, continue increments until ultimate failure. An alternative increment of 5% of burst pressure may be used.
- Analysis & statistics: When testing multiple samples, report mean and standard deviation. Weibull analysis can be used to calculate rated static pressure at 95% confidence when testing more than seven samples.
- Reporting: Test reports must reference ISO 4548-13 and include test establishment, filter type/batch, test temperature, oil grade, torque/angle applied, achieved pressure objective, burst pressure, failure mode/location, and any deviations.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).

This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 4548-13:2013), which has been
technically revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— temperature range reduced to more applicable values;
— each incremental pressure changed to the smaller value for more accurate determination;
— Weibull analysis included for getting the statistical data with multiple test samples.

Introduction
The ISO 4548 series establishes standard test procedures for measuring the performance of full-flow
lubricating oil filters for internal combustion engines. Each part in the series relates to a particular
performance characteristic.
Together the tests provide the information necessary to assess the characteristics of a filter, but if
agreed between the purchaser and the manufacturer, the tests may be conducted separately.
This document deals with filter modules made of composite materials for internal combustion engines
in terms of static burst pressure.
