ISO/TS 25393:2026 is an ISO Technical Specification for assessing electroplating coating systems on fasteners. It complements CQI-11 by adding fastener-specific guidance on coating properties, hydrogen embrittlement prevention, and the checks used by fastener manufacturers, chemical suppliers, electroplaters, and purchasers.
What does ISO/TS 25393:2026 specify?
ISO/TS 25393:2026 specifies how CQI-11 should be applied to coated fasteners and where fastener-specific additions are needed. It is aimed at electroplating process evaluation for fasteners, with emphasis on the coating properties expected of the finished part.
The document is organized into five clauses plus four informative annexes. Its structure is practical: clauses 1 to 3 set the scope, references, and terms; clause 4 adapts CQI-11 for fasteners; clause 5 adds fastener topics that CQI-11 does not cover well; the annexes give supporting guidance for testing and documentation.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Chemical composition and coating thickness |
| Annex B | Gaugeability and assemblability |
| Annex C | Torque/clamp force testing |
| Annex D | Corrosion tests |
What are the key requirements of ISO/TS 25393:2026?
ISO/TS 25393:2026 turns CQI-11 into a fastener-focused assessment tool. The most important requirements are in clause 4, with additional checks in clause 5 and the annexes.
Applying CQI-11 to fasteners
Clause 4.1 gives a key for reading CQI-11 items in a fastener context. AD means an additional question, SUB means a CQI-11 item is replaced by a fastener-specific version, and NA means the CQI-11 item is not suitable as written and must be handled with the fastener version instead.
In practice, this means users should not copy CQI-11 blindly into a fastener audit. They need to decide whether each question is kept, replaced, or added, so the review matches the actual plated fastener process.
Preventing internal hydrogen embrittlement
Clause 4.2 is the core technical part of the document. ISO/TS 25393:2026 requires that measures related to internal hydrogen embrittlement (IHE) for steel fasteners be considered and documented where relevant, including baking, supplemental process verification, and product testing.
The document distinguishes by fastener type and condition, such as steel fasteners, nuts, washers, and case-hardened screws. In practice, this means the supplier needs a documented control plan that fits the fastener design and mechanical condition rather than a single generic baking rule.
The document also links IHE control to process timing. Acid pickling time, the time between hydrogen-introducing treatment and baking, and the baking duration itself should be recorded. For plant users, this makes time control part of quality control, not just an operating detail.
Controlling the baking operation
ISO/TS 25393:2026 requires the baking process to be controlled so hydrogen can escape and does not return to the steel. The oven should be checked by thermal mapping, the temperature should be continuously recorded by zone, and the loading method should be documented.
The document also points to practical equipment control. It says thermocouples do not have to be mandatory in every case and that Pt100 probes should be considered; when Pt100 probes are used, they should be checked at least yearly. For the reader, this means oven qualification, monitoring, and maintenance all matter to hydrogen relief performance.
Recording and verification
Clause 4.2 also emphasizes records. Baking conditions should be automatically recorded, and verification should be done before shipment by the operator or by an independent person, depending on the case.
This matters because a plated fastener is only as credible as its traceability. If a customer asks how hydrogen risk was managed, the supplier needs records of the times, temperatures, and checks, not only a statement that the parts were baked.
Rework after coating removal
ISO/TS 25393:2026 treats rework as a controlled action: remove the coating system and process it again. If coating is removed and the part is replated, each baking step should be recorded and verified.
For users, this is important when nonconforming parts are stripped and returned to process. The standard ties rework back to the same hydrogen-control logic used for initial plating.
Additional fastener checks outside CQI-11
Clause 5 adds fastener topics that CQI-11 does not cover directly. These include coating composition and thickness, gaugeability, assemblability, torque/clamp force testing, and corrosion testing.
A practical point in clause 5 is that if cleaning is needed to meet cleanliness requirements, corrosion testing and torque/clamp force testing should be done after cleaning, because cleaning can change the result. That matters when a cleaning step is added late in the process flow.
What terms does ISO/TS 25393:2026 define?
- Rework - Removing a coating system and processing the targeted coating again, usually after stripping.
- CQI-11 - The AIAG plating system assessment that ISO/TS 25393:2026 uses as its base method for fasteners.
- Internal hydrogen embrittlement (IHE) - A hydrogen-related failure risk in steel fasteners that the document controls through timing, baking, and verification.
- Baking - The heat treatment used after hydrogen-introducing steps to drive hydrogen out of the fastener.
- Gaugeability - The ability of a threaded fastener to be checked with the correct gauges before or after coating.
- Assemblability - The ability of a coated fastener to still fit and function with its mating feature or drive.
- Torque/clamp force - The relationship between applied torque and achieved clamp load, used to judge how a fastener performs in use.
Who uses ISO/TS 25393:2026?
ISO/TS 25393:2026 is used by fastener manufacturers, chemical suppliers, electroplaters, and purchasers in the coated fastener supply chain. It is also useful to quality managers, process engineers, laboratory staff, and buyer-side technical reviewers who need to audit plating processes or confirm customer requirements.
In practice, they use it to review plating process controls, write or check IHE controls, set up sampling plans, choose thickness or composition methods, and document gaugeability, torque/clamp force, and corrosion testing.
Which standards are used with ISO/TS 25393:2026?
- ISO 1891-2 - Provides fastener terminology for coatings, so the document uses a common vocabulary.
- ISO 4042:2022 - The main technical basis for electroplated coating systems on fasteners and the primary reference throughout the document.
- ISO/TR 20491 - Gives background on hydrogen embrittlement in steel fasteners, which supports the IHE controls in clause 4.
- ISO 16047 - Provides the torque/clamp force testing method used in Annex C.
- ISO 1502 - Supports gauge selection and gauge wear checks in Annex B.
- ISO 2178 and ISO 3497 - Support coating thickness measurement by magnetic and X-ray methods in Annex A.
- ISO 9227 - Supports the salt spray corrosion tests in Annex D.
- ISO 3269 - Used where acceptance inspection or dispute handling is needed for sampling and agreement.
- ASTM F1941/F1941M, ASTM B633, and ASTM B117/B568 - Named as related specifications and methods in the document and annex examples.
What does the ISO/TS 25393:2026 document contain?
ISO/TS 25393:2026 contains a CQI-11 adaptation for fasteners, a hydrogen-embrittlement control section, and four informative annexes that turn the topic into checkable shop and laboratory practices. Annex A shows what to document for coating composition and thickness, including method choice and test reports. Annex B sets out what to record for gauges, thread checking, and assemblability. Annex C covers the test setup and records for torque/clamp force work. Annex D covers corrosion-test planning, cabinet control, operating conditions, and reporting.

Introduction
rd
Plating system assessment (CQI-11) 3 edition was developed by AIAG (Automotive Industry Action Group)
with the intent to help better evaluation of the quality systems in place at plating shops supplying OEM
automotive coatings such as zinc and zinc alloy electrodeposits, decorative plating applied to metal or
plastic substrates, and hard chromium deposits, as well as electroless nickel and electropolishing processes.
The objective of the 3rd edition of CQI-11 was to update as needed, improve document clarity, and include
the ISO 9001 and IATF 16949:2016 Quality Management System concepts of “Process Approach” and “Risk
Management”.
The Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) was founded in 1982 by representatives of the three largest
North American automotive manufacturers: Ford, General Motors and Chrysler. It was originally created
to develop recommendations and a framework for the improvement of quality in the North-American
automotive industry. Among others, the AIAG publishes automotive industry standards, including
Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) quality specifications. These documents have become a de facto
quality standard in North America that have to be complied with by all Tier 1 suppliers. Increasingly, these
suppliers are now requiring complete compliance from their suppliers, so that many Tier 2 and 3 automotive
suppliers now shall also comply.
rd
CQI-11 is intended to be a self-Assessment auditing tool for electroplating processes, and its 3 edition
was published by AIAG in 2019; its goal is that “… all customer engineering design record and specification
requirements are properly understood by the supplier and that the process has the potential to produce product
consistently meeting these requirements during an actual production run at the quoted production rate." CQI-11
is used in the automotive supply chain to establish confidence in component suppliers and their production
processes.
However, CQI-11 remains a general system assessment for plating automotive parts. For the purpose of
fastener coating and in order to achieve the expected functional properties of the fasteners as specified in
ISO 4042, some specific modulus should also be considered additionally to CQI-11 and/or some “questions/
items” need to be completed.
The purpose of this document is to specifically address fastener-specific aspects not fully covered by CQI-11,
and to clarify some questions/items when its content is not applicable or not suitable for fasteners.
This document should be used as guidance by the electroplaters additionally to CQI-11, for the appropriate
application to fasteners.
This document is primarily established from the following basic documents:
— ISO 4042, Fasteners — Electroplated coating systems;
— ISO/TR 20491, Fasteners — Fundamentals of hydrogen embrittlement in steel fasteners;
— ISO 16047, Fasteners — Torque/clamp force testing.
It is consistent with ASTM F1941/F1941M and ASTM B633.

Introduction
e
Part Approval Process - PPAP).
— ISO 4042, Fixations — Systèmes de revêtements électrolytiques;
— ISO/TR 20491, Fixations — Principes de la fragilisation par l'hydrogène pour les fixations en acier;
— ISO 16047, Éléments de fixation — Essais couple/tension.
Il est cohérent avec les ASTM F1941/F1941M et ASTM B633.

Fixations — Évaluation des systèmes de revêtement
électrolytiques — Aspects complémentaires et additionnels
au CQI-11
1 Domaine d'application
