BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 509, Pl-iricipal Dimensions of Pallet Trucks, was drawn
up by Tecliriical Committee TSO/TC 5 I, Pailets fol- Uiiit Loud Method of Materials Handling,
the Secretariat of which is held by the British Standards Institution (BSI).
Work on this question by the Technical Committee began in 1960 and led, in 1962.
to the adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
In June 1963. this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 580) was circulated to all the TSO
Member Bodies for enquiry. It was approved by the following Member Bodies :

PRINCIPAL DIMENSIONS OF PALLET TRUCKS
1. SCOPE
This IS0 Recomrncndation establishes the basic dimensions for pallet trucks on which flat
pallets complying with IS0 Recommendation R 198 * and box pallets of the same nominal
dimensions complying with IS0 Recommendation R , . . ,** and their loads. can be transported
without risk of damage.
The dimensions apply to the heights, widths and lengths of the fingers of pallet trucks. which
may have either single or tandem trail wheels.
NOTE. - It should not be inferred that the use of a particular six of pallet truck is restricted to one particular
size of pallet.

2. SYMBOLS AND DESIGNATIONS
Figure 1, page 4, illustrates a pallet truck having tandem trail wheels, as this type of truck has the
greatest overall dimensions over the wheels.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation lSO/R 509, Dimensions principales des tuanspalettes, a été élabo-
rée par le Comité Technique TSO/TC 51, Plateaux de chargement pour transport et manuten-
tion directe de charges unitaires, dont le Secrétariat est assuré par la British Standards
Institution (BSI).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question furent entrepris par le Comité Technique en 1960
et aboutirent en 1962 à l’adoption d’un Projet de Recommandation ISO.
En juin 1963, ce Projet de Recommandation 1SO (NO 580) fut soumis à l’enquête de
tous les Comités Membres de I’ISO. I1 fut approuvé par les Comités Membres suivants:

DIMENSIONS PRINCIPALES DES TRANSPALETTES
1. OBJET
La présente Recommandation IS0 fixe les dimensions de base des transpalettes de façon que les
palettes normalisées selon la Recommandation ISO/R 198 * et les palettes-caisses de mêmes
dimensions nominales selon la Recommandation ISO/R . . . **, et leurs charges, puissent être
transportées sans risque de dommage.
Les dimensions s’appliquent aux hauteurs, aux largeurs et aux longueurs des bras de fourche des
transpalettes, chacun d’eux pouvant avoir une ou deux roues porteuses.
NOTE. - I1 ne doit pas en être déduit que l’emploi d’un transpalette de dimensions données est limité à une seule
grandeur de palette.

La Figure 1, page 4, représente un transpalette muni de deux roues porteuses par bras, car c’est
ce type de transpalette qui présente les plus grandes dimensions d’encombrement des roues.
