Overview

ISO 13583-1:2023 - "Centrifugally cast steel and alloy products - Part 1: General testing and tolerances" specifies general requirements, test methods and tolerances for horizontal and vertical centrifugally cast steel and alloy products intended for heat-resisting, corrosion-resisting and general engineering applications. The standard sets expectations for supply, mechanical testing, surface finish, minimum sound wall (MSW) thickness, dimensional and shape tolerances, inspection procedures and optional supplementary tests.

• Scope and materials: Materials are to be specified by the purchaser; products must conform to ISO 4990 delivery requirements.
• Mechanical tests: Tensile tests follow ISO 6892-1 (room temperature) or ISO 6892-2 (elevated temperature) when agreed. Test pieces may be taken from castings or separately cast samples from the same melt if agreed.
• Minimum sound wall (MSW): MSW defines the net thickness after removing surface porosity/roughness; measurement methods and tolerances must be agreed. MSW measurements are taken at 90° intervals.
• Dimensional tolerances: Default tolerances apply unless purchaser specifies otherwise. Examples from the standard include:
  • Length tolerances: ≤150 mm: +4/0 mm; >150 mm: +5/0 mm.
  • Outside diameter as-cast tolerances: e.g., ≤150 mm: +2/0 mm; >1 000 mm: +8/0 mm.
  • Machined surface defaults (if not specified): outside diameter tolerance +1.5/0 mm; inside diameter tolerance 0/−1.5 mm.
• Inspection and acceptance: Visual examination of as-cast outside surfaces; cracks are unacceptable. Dye penetrant (ISO 4987) and magnetic particle testing (ISO 4986) are referenced for defect verification. Acceptance severity levels for penetrant inspection are specified unless otherwise agreed.
• Supplementary tests: Purchaser can require pressure tests (ISO 4990), acid etch ring tests, ferrite determination (ISO 13520), corrosion tests (ISO 3651-1/2), eddy current, radiography (ISO 4993) and ultrasonic testing (ISO 4992-1/2).

Applications and intended users

• Typical users: foundries, centrifugal casting manufacturers, procurement/specification engineers, quality/inspection teams, fabricators and end-users in power generation, petrochemical, chemical processing and heavy engineering.
• Practical use: specifying MSW, agreed inspection regimes, defining mechanical test options, and embedding acceptable dimensional tolerances into purchase orders and quality plans for centrifugally cast components.
