General Information
Overview
ISO 24537:2007 is an international standard that specifies the essential dimensions for lightweight reels used in the storage and retrieval of processed 16 mm and 35 mm microfilm. These reels, made from plastic or metal, are designed for manually threaded microfilm equipment and ensure compatibility across various devices handling micrographics. The standard excludes reels intended for automated 16 mm retrieval systems, which are covered under ISO 7761, and camera spools, which fall under ISO 6148.
This standard plays a critical role in maintaining uniformity and physical interoperability in microfilm handling, thereby reducing equipment incompatibilities and safeguarding the delicate microfilm during storage and use.
Key Topics
Reel Dimensions
ISO 24537:2007 defines precise measurements for both 16 mm and 35 mm microfilm reels, including flange positions, spindle hole sizes, and location surfaces to ensure a consistent fit in manually threaded equipment.Spindle Hole Designs
Multiple permissible spindle hole designs are detailed, allowing manufacturers flexibility while maintaining adherence to standardized dimensions for smooth equipment engagement.Lateral Runout (Wobble)
The maximum acceptable lateral runout of reels is specified at 1.3 mm to prevent film damage and ensure reliable operation within microfilm readers.Flange Requirements
Flanges may be either solid or spoked, but must be free from surface defects such as flashing or molding lines that could interfere with film transport.Optional Features
The standard allows optional film loading slots in reels and flanges, provided they conform to specified dimensional criteria.Color Restrictions
Reels can be of any color except black, preventing confusion with camera reels which use different standards and applications.
Applications
Microfilm Storage
Ensures reels used to store processed microfilm conform to physical dimensional standards, protecting film integrity and compatibility with reading equipment.Manual Microfilm Equipment
Supports the operation of manually threaded microfilm readers by providing consistent reel specifications, which help maintain reliability and minimize equipment malfunctions.Archiving and Document Management
Widely used in archival institutions, libraries, and government agencies for micrographic documentation management, facilitating standardized handling and retrieval processes.Manufacturing of Reels
Guides manufacturers in producing compatible and standardized reels, aiding in mass production that meets international quality and compatibility requirements.
Related Standards
ISO 7761 – Specifies dimensions and operational constraints for 16 mm reels used in automated retrieval systems, complementing the manual-reel focus of ISO 24537:2007.
ISO 6148 – Defines dimensions for camera spools and cores frequently utilized for microfilm storage, covering reel types not included in ISO 24537.
ISO 6196 – Provides vocabulary and terminology for micrographics technology, ensuring consistent language across ISO standards related to microfilm.
Adherence to ISO 24537:2007 safeguards physical compatibility and functional reliability in microfilm reel usage, making it essential for professionals involved in micrographics, archival management, microfilm equipment manufacturing, and document preservation. This standard enhances operational efficiency by standardizing critical reel dimensions, leading to longevity and safe handling of valuable microfilm records.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent

ISO 24537 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 171, Document management applications,
Subcommittee SC 2, Application issues.
Introduction
There is an increasing variety of equipment available to retrieve 16 mm and 35 mm roll microfilm. Some
equipment uses conventional threading from the supply reel to the take-up reel in order to drive the microfilm.
Other equipment uses automatic threading techniques with reels and an ISO approved cartridge.
This International Standard is intended to provide 16 mm and 35 mm reel dimensions which will allow
compatibility with readers using conventional threading, and which can also be used for microfilm storage. If a
16 mm reel is to be used in a cartridge for use in automatic threading equipment, the requirements of
ISO 7761 will apply. The requirements for camera spools are specified in ISO 6148.
