Overview
ISO 15065:2005 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), specifying the dimensions and designation of countersinks designed for countersunk head screws. These screws have a head configuration compliant with ISO 7721. The standard details precise dimensional requirements and naming conventions that ensure compatibility and interchangeability across various screw types with countersunk heads.
This standard applies to a wide range of screws, including metal screws, sheet metal screws, and self-tapping screws featuring different head profiles such as slotted, cross recessed, and hexalobular drives. By harmonizing the countersink dimensions, ISO 15065:2005 facilitates consistent manufacturing and quality assurance processes in mechanical and industrial assembly.
Key Topics
- Countersink Dimensions: Defines exact measurements for countersinks that accommodate countersunk head screws, ensuring secure seating and optimized load distribution.
- Screw Compatibility: Applicable to screws standardized under ISO 2009, ISO 2010, ISO 1482, ISO 1483, ISO 7046 (parts 1 and 2), ISO 7047, ISO 7050, ISO 7051, ISO 15482, ISO 15483, ISO 14584, ISO 14586, and ISO 14587.
- Designation Method: Provides the systematic naming convention of countersinks referring to nominal screw diameters for clear identification and reference.
- Technical Drawings: Specifies graphical representation guidelines for countersinks on technical and engineering drawings, facilitating clear communication between designers and manufacturers.
- Normative References: Includes essential cross-references to ISO 273 (pass-through holes for screws) and ISO 7721 (head configuration and gauge verification).
Applications
- Manufacturing: Used by engineers and machinists to accurately produce countersinks that perfectly fit corresponding countersunk screws, improving assembly integrity.
- Quality Control: Allows quality assurance professionals to verify dimensional conformity of countersinks against internationally accepted benchmarks.
- Mechanical Design: Supports mechanical designers and product developers in specifying correct countersink dimensions, optimizing screw head seating and reducing component wear.
- Industrial Assembly: Ensures standard countersinks in machinery and equipment are compatible with a broad spectrum of countersunk screws, minimizing misfits and assembly errors.
- Automotive and Aerospace: Critical for applications demanding high precision fastening where countersunk screws are prevalent, supporting safety and reliability standards.
Related Standards
- ISO 7721 - Defines the head configuration of countersunk screws, providing the foundational profile referenced by ISO 15065 for countersink design.
- ISO 273 - Specifies hole dimensions for screws, crucial for understanding the passage holes related to countersink arrangements.
- ISO 2009 & ISO 2010 - Standards for slotted countersunk head metal screws.
- ISO 1482 & ISO 1483 - Standards covering slotted countersunk head sheet metal screws.
- ISO 7046 (Parts 1 & 2) & ISO 7047 - For cross-recessed countersunk head metal screws.
- ISO 7050 & ISO 7051 - Pertains to cross-recessed sheet metal screws with flat or domed countersunk heads.
- ISO 15482 & ISO 15483 - Standards that include self-tapping countersunk screws with cross-recessed drives.
- ISO 14584, ISO 14586 & ISO 14587 - Cover countersunk screws with hexalobular internal drives for metal and sheet metal applications.
By adhering to ISO 15065:2005, organizations ensure compatibility, improve product quality, and facilitate global trade for fastening components featuring countersunk heads. This standard is indispensable for manufacturers, designers, and engineers working with various types of countersunk head screws requiring precise countersink dimensions and clear designation practices.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent

Avant-propos
votants.
