SIST EN 749:2005 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 749:2004, published by SIST for handball and indoor hockey goals. It specifies the functional and safety requirements, test methods, assembly instructions, warning label content, and marking for goals used in training and competition. The note also says goals made to this standard can be used for indoor football.
What does SIST EN 749:2005 specify?
SIST EN 749:2005 covers two goal types and the related safety requirements for handball and indoor hockey goals. It applies to handball goals for training and competition.
The document is organized into clauses on scope, normative references, requirements, safety requirements, test methods, assembly, installation and maintenance instructions, warning label, and marking. Annex A provides examples of foundations.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 749:2005?
Goal types, dimensions and materials
Clause 3 classifies goals as Type 1, with ground sockets, and Type 2, as freestanding goals. This matters because the installation method changes how the goal is fixed and what safety checks are needed.
The standard also sets the main construction rules for the frame, nets and fixings. The frame may be made of timber, steel, light metal or plastics, while the brackets and bars for Type 2 need corrosion protection and the net fixings must be non-corrosive metal or plastic. In practice, buyers and manufacturers need to choose materials that suit indoor use and resist wear and corrosion.
Net construction and retention
Clause 3.4.2 sets requirements for net dimensions and physical properties, including mesh breaking strength classes and rope breaking force classes for the net headline. This means the net is not just a visual accessory - it is part of the safety performance of the goal.
The net must be hung loosely so a ball cannot rebound from structural parts, and the fixing devices must be outside the net. If an additional net curtain is used, it must match the main net in mesh and width and be fixed at the front by the stated offset. In practice, the installer has to make sure the ball cannot pass between the frame and the net and that the net cannot create a rebound hazard.
Safety against injury and instability
Clause 4 requires rounded corners and edges, rounded goal-frame edges, and safe net fixings. This reduces the risk of cuts, snags and impact injuries during play and handling.
The goal must also pass strength and stability requirements. The crossbar must not fracture, collapse or show excessive permanent deformation in the strength test, and the goal must not fall over or slide in the stability test. For users, this means the goal has to stay safe under load and during normal match use.
Clause 4.7 adds entrapment limits for parts above 1200 mm from the ground. This is meant to prevent a player from being trapped on protrusions or openings around net supports and similar parts.
Instructions, warning and marking
Clause 6 requires written assembly, installation and maintenance instructions, including a warning to secure unused goals against overturning. Clause 7 requires a permanent warning label about permitted use, fastener checks, tilting restraint and climbing. Clause 8 requires marking with the document number, the maker or trader identification, the year of manufacture of the frame, and the warning label information.
What terms does SIST EN 749:2005 define?
- Type 1 - a handball goal with ground sockets, intended to be fixed into sockets in the playing surface.
- Type 2 - a freestanding handball goal with supporting parts and anti-tilting devices.
- Ground sockets - recessed fittings used to anchor Type 1 goals in place.
- Net headline - the rope or line drawn through the top of the net and fixed so the net stays in position.
- Net supporting brackets - parts that support the net on Type 2 goals without protruding beyond the frame.
- Anti-tilting devices - devices fitted to Type 2 goals to prevent overturning.
- Frame entrapment - a hazardous opening or angle in the upper frame area where a player could become trapped.
Who uses SIST EN 749:2005?
SIST EN 749:2005 is used by manufacturers, importers and retailers of indoor sports equipment, as well as by installers and facility operators. It is also relevant to quality managers, test laboratories and buyers who need to specify, inspect or verify handball goals for training halls, competition venues and indoor hockey use.
What changed in SIST EN 749:2005 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 749:2005 replaces SIST EN 749:1996 + A1:1998. The European text also states that EN 749:2004 supersedes EN 749:1995 + A1:1998.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 749:2005?
- EN ISO 1806 - used for determining mesh breaking force of the netting.
- prEN ISO 2307 - used for determining the breaking force of fibre ropes, including the net headline.
- EN ISO 2062 - cited for the breaking strength of the net yarn.
What does the SIST EN 749:2005 document contain?
SIST EN 749:2005 includes figures for the two goal types, tables for classification, net dimensions and strength classes, and a stability test set-up. It also gives the conditioning step before testing and the load application methods for strength and stability checks.
The document goes beyond product geometry and test methods by covering assembly, installation, maintenance, warning label text and product marking. That makes it useful both for design and for field inspection.
Annex A shows foundation examples, including how a ground socket is set in relation to the sport surface and drainage. The bibliography also points to EN ISO 2062 for yarn testing.
