Overview
SIST EN ISO 8130-5:2021 specifies a standardized method for determining the flow properties of a powder/air mixture, particularly for coating powders. This European and International Standard is essential for industries utilizing powder coatings, ensuring the consistent quality of application processes by characterizing how powders behave when fluidized with air. The method assesses flow properties influenced by powder composition, density, particle size and shape, agglomeration tendency, and electrostatic charge acceptance.
Key Topics
- Scope of Testing: Defines a laboratory procedure to estimate transport and spraying characteristics of coating powders as they interact with air.
- Influencing Factors: Highlights critical powder properties - such as density, particle size distribution, and shape - that affect fluidization and flow rate.
- Testing Conditions: Specifies standard conditions for temperature, humidity, and air pressure to ensure reproducibility and comparability of results.
- Measurement Parameters:
- Fluidization factor (φ): Calculated from the height of the powder at rest and during fluidization.
- Powder flow rate (R): Calculated using the mass of powder discharged and the fluidization factor during a set time interval.
- Apparatus Requirements: Outlines necessary equipment, including a fluidization vessel, dry air source, flowmeter, analytical balance, and associated sampling and measuring tools.
- Result Validation: Emphasizes the use of repeated measurements and averaging to ensure reliable and representative flow property data.
Applications
SIST EN ISO 8130-5:2021 delivers tangible value across industries that use coating powders, particularly in:
- Powder Coating Manufacturing: Quality control for batch consistency, ensuring powders are suited for automated spray or fluidized bed applications.
- Industrial Surface Finishing: Evaluation of powders before application to metals, automotive parts, furniture, electronics, and appliances for uniform coat thickness and appearance.
- Product Development: Assists in R&D efforts to optimize powder formulations for improved application characteristics.
- Process Calibration: Helps equipment manufacturers and operators set optimal parameters for powder feed, air flow, and electrostatic charging in coating processes.
- Regulatory Compliance: Enables manufacturers and suppliers to meet international and European powder coating standards, facilitating market access and customer confidence.
Related Standards
For comprehensive powder coating quality assurance, consider these closely associated standards:
- EN ISO 8130-14: Coating powders - Vocabulary. Provides terminology relevant to powder coatings, supporting harmonized communication.
- ISO 15528: Paints, varnishes, and raw materials - Sampling. Details procedures for representing powder samples in testing.
- Other EN ISO 8130 Series Parts: Address additional powder coating test methods, such as particle size analysis, electrostatic chargeability, and melt flow index.
Practical Value
By following SIST EN ISO 8130-5:2021, organizations can:
- Achieve consistent coating performance by selecting powders with validated flow properties
- Reduce application defects and material waste in production
- Enhance the efficiency of powder coating process setup and troubleshooting
- Provide transparent and standardized product data to customers, auditors, and regulators
SIST EN ISO 8130-5:2021 is a key reference for professionals in paint, coating, and surface finishing industries aiming for process optimization and international standardization in powder coating operations.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/
