Overview
SIST EN 60512-12-5:2006 is a European standard developed by CLC, focusing on connectors for electronic equipment. Specifically, it details Test 12e, a soldering heat resistance test using the soldering iron method. This standard establishes a uniform procedure to evaluate a connector's ability to withstand thermal stress caused by direct exposure to soldering iron heat, ensuring reliability in electronic assembly processes.
This testing standard is part of the broader EN 60512 series, which covers various mechanical and electrical test methods for connectors. SIST EN 60512-12-5:2006 aligns with international IEC 60512-12-5:2006 standards and is critical for manufacturers and quality assurance engineers involved in the design, testing, and validation of electronic connectors.
Key Topics
- Scope: Defines the standardized test method for assessing the heat resistance of connectors when exposed to soldering iron temperature (350 °C standard).
- Test Method: Specifies preparation of specimens, soldering iron temperature control, and exact application duration (typically 10 ± 1 seconds).
- Visual Inspection: Requires detailed pre- and post-test visual examination (10× magnification) to identify any defects impacting connector performance.
- Parameters to Specify:
- Specimen preparation details if deviating from the standard
- Soldering iron tip size (type A or B)
- Duration of soldering iron application
- Any deviations from the documented test procedure
- Normative References: Incorporates related standards such as IEC 60068-2-20 (environmental testing) and IEC 60512-1-1 (visual examination protocols).
Applications
SIST EN 60512-12-5:2006 is essential for:
- Quality Control in Connector Manufacturing: Ensures connectors can endure soldering temperatures without damage.
- Product Qualification: Validates new connector designs under heat stress conditions typical in manufacturing environments.
- Component Specification Compliance: Supports compliance with customer or industry requirements for heat resistance during soldering.
- Reliability Testing in Electronics Assembly: Helps identify potential failure points from thermal exposure during manual or automated soldering processes.
- Research & Development: Assists in improving materials and design to enhance thermal resistance performance of connectors.
This standard benefits manufacturers, testers, and electronic product developers by providing a repeatable and reliable test method to verify connector durability in soldering environments.
Related Standards
- IEC 60512 Series: Comprehensive set of tests and measurements for connectors, including solderability, mechanical, and environmental tests.
- Part 12-1: Solderability - Solder bath method
- Part 12-2: Solderability - Soldering iron method
- Part 12-4: Resistance to soldering heat - Solder bath method
- Part 12-6: Sealing against flux and cleaning solvents in machine soldering
- IEC 60068-2-20: Environmental testing guidelines, including soldering iron method procedures and temperature specifications.
- IEC 60512-1-1: General visual examination techniques for connectors, ensuring defect detection before and after testing.
Following SIST EN 60512-12-5:2006 ensures that electronic connectors meet critical durability benchmarks against soldering heat, a key factor contributing to the overall quality and reliability of electronic devices. Adopting this standardized test promotes international consistency and supports global trade and manufacturing standards in the electromechanical connector industry.
