Pallet production specification - Part 2: Construction specification for 1000 mm x 1200 mm flat wooden pallets

This European Standard specifies the manufacturing characteristics of flat re-usable wooden 1000 mm × 1200 mm, double deck, non-reversible, 4-way entry, 9 block skid and perimeter base pallets suitable for transport, storage, handling or exchange use. It also gives some requirements for manufacture and marking and addresses the issue of safety.

EN 13698-2:2009 is the CEN European Standard that defines the pallet production specification for flat wooden pallets sized 1000 mm × 1200 mm. It covers reusable, double-deck, non-reversible, 4‑way entry pallets - both 9‑block skid pallets (Type 1) and perimeter base pallets (Type 2). The standard sets manufacturing characteristics, material requirements, assembly rules, inspection and marking requirements, and safety-related test criteria for pallets intended for transport, storage, handling or exchange.

  • Diagonal rigidity per EN ISO 8611‑1 (Test No.10): six corner drops at 1 m on three pallets; mean distortion ≤ 3%.
  • Joint separation (Annex C): mean and ≥75% of recordings must meet separation forces: block/stringer/top deck = 5.5 kN, block/bottom deck = 5.5 kN, stringer/intermediate top deck = 3.0 kN.
• Inspection & marking: Pallets must be inspected; compliant pallets marked on the outer side of the centre block with the standard number, country and manufacturer marks.
