This standard specifies test methods and performance requirements for reusable wooden and wood-based pallet collars. There are two categories of constructions:- Class 1 general purpose pallet collars; - Class 2 light duty pallet collars.

Overview

EN 13545:2002 - "Pallet superstructures - Pallet collars - Test methods and performance requirements" (CEN) defines test methods and minimum performance criteria for reusable wooden and wood‑based pallet collars. The standard covers two construction categories:

• Class 1 - General purpose pallet collars
• Class 2 - Light duty pallet collars

It is mainly intended for standard collar heights of 200 mm and 400 mm and establishes conditioning, test procedures, mechanical test methods and pass/fail limits for product performance.

• Tensile testing of hinges and rivet joints (not for rigid corner bars)
  • Service resistance: general purpose 2 kN (200 mm) and 4 kN (400 mm); light duty 1 kN / 2 kN.
  • Break thresholds: general purpose 6 kN / 12 kN; light duty 3 kN / 6 kN.
  • Residual deformation limits: ≤ 2 mm (1.0 mm per hinge flange).
• Shear loading of supporting lips
  • Service loads: 5 kN (general purpose) and 2.5 kN (light duty).
  • Maximum deflection under service load: ≤ 7 mm; residual after release ≤ 2 mm.
  • Minimum ultimate shear force: ≥ 6 kN (general) and ≥ 3 kN (light duty).
• Load testing of stacked pallet collars
  • Tests cover stacked configurations (four × 200 mm or two × 400 mm collars) with combined vertical and horizontal loading to simulate stacking and handling.
• Materials
  • Annex B: plywood material requirements referenced (EN 314-2).
