Overview

SIST EN 13630-11:2025, published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), specifies a standardized method for determining the velocity of detonation (VoD) of detonating cords used in civil applications. This document is part of the broader EN 13630 series related to explosives for civil uses, focusing specifically on detonating cords. Safety fuses are not within the scope of this standard. The test procedures detailed in the standard ensure accurate, consistent, and safe determination of the performance characteristics of detonating cords.

The standard supports compliance with essential European Union regulations, specifically Directive 2014/28/EU, by providing a recognized method for product testing and market supervision of explosives for civil uses.

Key Topics

  • Scope of the Standard: Defines procedures exclusively for detonating cords, not safety fuses.
  • Test Methods: Includes two principal methods for measuring the velocity of detonation:
    • Start-Stop Method: Uses two sensors to detect the detonation front as it passes through a set distance on the cord.
    • Continuous Method: Utilizes a continuous measuring probe along the cord.
  • Test Sample Preparation: Provides guidelines for selecting and sealing test samples to ensure accuracy and safety.
  • Apparatus Requirements: Outlines the necessary equipment, including precise sensors, detonators, temperature and humidity measurement tools, and structural supports.
  • Expression and Reporting of Results: Details how to present test results and the required content for a comprehensive test report.

Applications

The methods established in SIST EN 13630-11:2025 are essential for stakeholders involved in:

  • Manufacturing of explosives for civil uses: Ensures quality control and product consistency for detonating cords.
  • Testing laboratories: Provides a harmonized procedure for verifying the detonation velocity, which affects explosive performance in construction, mining, and demolition.
  • Regulatory compliance: Supports conformity assessment with EU safety directives tied to explosives.
  • Product certification: Facilitates third-party validation and certification processes required for placing civil explosives on the market.
  • Performance assessment: Enables reliable evaluation of detonating cord characteristics for end-users in sectors like mining and civil engineering.

Using this standard helps organizations:

  • Meet regulatory obligations under Directive 2014/28/EU.
  • Provide traceable, repeatable, and internationally recognized test results.
  • Enhance product safety and user confidence by complying with best practices for testing explosives.

Related Standards

  • EN 13630-1:2025: Explosives for civil uses - Detonating cords and safety fuses - Part 1: Requirements. This standard outlines general requirements and specifications for detonating cords and safety fuses, acting as a foundation for part 11.
  • EN 13857-1:2025: Explosives for civil uses - Part 1: Vocabulary. Provides the terminology used throughout the EN 13630 series for clarity and standardization.
  • EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017: General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. While not mandatory in the test report for SIST EN 13630-11:2025, it is referenced for aligning quality and competence in testing procedures.

Adhering to SIST EN 13630-11:2025 ensures consistency, safety, and legal compliance in the evaluation of detonating cords, ultimately supporting safe and effective blasting operations in civil industries. For more details on the full EN 13630 series and updates, consult the CEN website.
