Overview

EN 13630-11:2025 is the latest European standard covering explosives for civil use, specifically focusing on detonating cords. This document specifies a precise and standardized method for determining the velocity of detonation of detonating cords used in civil applications. It clarifies the scope by excluding safety fuses and supersedes the previous version EN 13630-11:2002, offering updated technical requirements and test procedures.

The standard is essential for ensuring reliable performance and safety in the handling and application of detonating cords by providing a consistent testing method recognized across Europe. It supports compliance with EU Directive 2014/28/EU concerning market availability and supervision of civil explosives.

Key Topics

  • Scope: Focuses exclusively on detonating cords, excluding safety fuses, with a detailed methodology for measuring detonation velocity.

  • Test Methods:

    • Start-Stop Method: Measures the time taken by the detonation front to travel between two sensors on the detonating cord.
    • Continuous Method: Uses a continuous probe to monitor and record the detonation velocity over a specific length of the detonating cord.
  • Apparatus Requirements:

    • Sensors for detecting detonation front (e.g., optical fibers, ionization pins, piezoelectric pins).
    • Time-measuring electronics with ±1 microsecond accuracy.
    • Detonators conforming to EN 13630-1:2025.
    • Safety sealing materials to prevent explosive material leakage and moisture ingress.
    • Environmental monitoring devices such as thermometers and hygrometers to record ambient conditions.
  • Preparation and Testing:

    • Test samples consist of eight detonating cord pieces, each approximately 1500 mm long, sealed at both ends.
    • Tests must be performed under regulated ambient conditions as specified in EN 13630-1:2025.
  • Result Expression and Reporting:

    • Detonation velocity is expressed in meters per second (m/s).
    • Test reports must include references to the standard, identification of cords tested, ambient conditions, the procedure used, and individual recorded velocities.
  • Compliance and Safety:

    • Integrates principles supporting compliance with EU Directive 2014/28/EU on civil explosives.
    • Warns on patent rights and the necessity of continuous reference to the official standard list for presumption of conformity.

Applications

EN 13630-11:2025 is critical for industries and professionals involved in:

  • Civil explosives manufacturing – verifying the performance parameters of detonating cords before market release.
  • Demolition and mining operations – ensuring detonating cords used in blasting and controlled explosions meet reliability and safety requirements.
  • Safety and quality assurance laboratories – implementing standardized testing procedures to certify explosive products.
  • Regulatory bodies and compliance experts – assessing conformance with EU explosives safety directives.
  • Explosive device developers and engineers – designing systems that rely on known detonation velocities for timing and effect control.

This standard enhances operational safety and product reliability by standardizing vital performance testing, thereby reducing risks associated with explosives.

Summary

EN 13630-11:2025 provides a robust framework for the accurate measurement of the velocity of detonation in detonating cords, ensuring consistent safety and performance verification in line with European regulations. By employing modern measurement techniques and clearly defined procedures, civil explosives industries benefit from enhanced quality control and regulatory compliance. This standard is a vital resource for professionals engaged in the manufacture, testing, and application of detonating cords in civil engineering, mining, and demolition sectors.
