Overview
oSIST prEN IEC 60335-2-3:2024/oprAA:2024 is a European draft standard developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) under the reference IEC 60335-2-3. This standard specifies particular safety requirements for electric irons-including both dry irons and steam irons-with a rated voltage up to 250 V and a water reservoir or boiler not exceeding 5 liters. The standard applies to appliances for household and similar use, ensuring products meet robust safety criteria to protect users against electrical and physical hazards.
This draft amendment is essential for manufacturers, compliance experts, and regulatory bodies in the household appliance sector, and it serves as a critical reference for market access within the European Economic Area.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
- Covers electric irons intended for household and similar applications.
- Addresses both dry and steam irons, including models with separate water tanks or boilers.
- Rated supply voltage not exceeding 250 V, with water reservoir/boiler capacity up to 5 liters.
- Excludes considerations for appliances intended exclusively for commercial use.
Safety Requirements
- Details measures to address foreseeable hazards associated with electric irons.
- Specifies mandatory warnings and instructions, such as:
- Clear guidance on intended use.
- Restrictions on cord placement to prevent accidents (e.g., cords must not hang over table edges or touch hot surfaces).
- Prohibits remote operation and delayed start timer functions to prevent unsafe unintended operation.
- Establishes requirements for the minimum length of supply cords.
- Prohibits continuous unattended operation to mitigate fire and burn risks.
Conformance and Harmonization
- Linked directly to key EU Directives, including the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU) and Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU).
- Compliance with this standard supports presumption of conformity when cited in the Official Journal of the European Union.
Applications
Electric irons are ubiquitous in domestic environments and are also used in similar non-household settings such as small offices, hotels, and guest houses.
Practical benefits of adhering to oSIST prEN IEC 60335-2-3:2024/oprAA:2024 include:
- Market Access: Products certified to this standard can be legally placed on European markets, ensuring compliance with EU safety legislation.
- User Protection: Enhanced safety mechanisms help prevent electrical shocks, burns, and other injuries.
- Product Liability Mitigation: Meeting standardized safety requirements can help manufacturers reduce legal risks and improve product trustworthiness.
- Clearer Instructions: Specified user guidance and warnings reduce misuse and improve consumer satisfaction.
- Universal Application: Applies to a wide range of iron designs, including those with advanced features, provided they fall within the specified voltage and capacity limits.
