Influence of materials on water intended for human consumption - Influence due to migration - Part 3: Test method for ion exchange and adsorbent resins
This document specifies a procedure to determine the migration of substances from ion exchange, adsorbent or hybrid resin materials for use in contact with water intended for human consumption.
Resins comprise synthetic organic macromolecular materials.
This standard is applicable to resins of the following types:
- ion exchange resins: used to modify the composition of water (e.g. softening by removal of calcium ions). They can be in either an anionic or cationic state;
- adsorbent resins: used to lower the concentration of undesirable substances (usually organic pollutants) from water. They are used in a neutral state;
- hybrid adsorbers: Organic polymer based ion exchange resin or adsorbent resin with incorporated inorganic (e.g. iron hydroxide) or second organic phase. Used to lower the concentration of undesirable substances (specific inorganic or organic pollutants) from water. They can be in either an anionic, cationic or neutral state.
Harze enthalten synthetische organische makromolekulare Substanzen.
— Ionenaustauscher-Harze: sie werden verwendet, um die Wasserbeschaffenheit zu verändern (z. B. Entfernung von Calciumionen zur Enthärtung). Sie können sowohl Anionenaustauscher- als auch Kationenaustauscher-Harze sein;
— Adsorberharze: sie werden eingesetzt, um die Konzentration von unerwünschten Substanzen (normalerweise organische Schadstoffe) im Wasser zu verringern. Sie werden in neutralem Zustand eingesetzt;
- résines échangeuses d’ions : utilisées pour modifier la composition de l’eau (par exemple, adoucissement par élimination des ions calcium). Elles peuvent être soit anioniques, soit cationiques ;
- résines adsorbantes : utilisées pour abaisser la concentration de l’eau en substances indésirables (généralement des polluants organiques). Elles sont utilisées à l’état neutre ;
– smole za ionsko izmenjavo: uporabljajo se za spreminjanje sestave vode (npr. mehčanje z odstranitvijo kalcijevih ionov). Lahko so v anionskem ali kationskem stanju;
– vpojne smole: uporabljajo se za znižanje koncentracije neželenih snovi (običajno organskih onesnaževal) v vodi. Uporabljajo se v nevtralnem stanju;

Overview
EN 12873-3:2019 (CEN) specifies a laboratory test method to determine migration of substances from ion exchange, adsorbent and hybrid resins that are intended to contact water for human consumption. The standard covers synthetic organic macromolecular resins used for water softening, pollutant adsorption and hybrid adsorbers (organic polymer resins incorporating inorganic or second organic phases). It defines preparation, test water quality, apparatus, sampling modes and reporting for migration testing to assess potential impacts on drinking water quality.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Migration testing for ion exchange resins (anionic/cationic), adsorbent resins (neutral) and hybrid adsorbers.
- Test principle: Static/dynamic contact of resin with chlorine-free test water at (23 ± 2) °C, followed by chemical analysis of leachates.
- Test water: Chlorine-free, conductivity < 2 mS/m and TOC < 0.2 mg/L C (e.g., reverse osmosis or deionized water with activated carbon filtration).
- Apparatus: Inert materials (glass, limited PTFE use, stainless steel); column bed height to diameter ratio h/d = 5 ± 0.3 (see Annex B).
- Pre-treatment: Resin rinsing, exhaustion/regeneration or cycling per manufacturer instructions (do not regenerate in test apparatus).
- Sampling modes:
- Mode A - collect first five bed volumes individually (A1–A5).
- Mode B (default unless otherwise required) - collect and combine specified bed-volume groups (TA, TB, TC) and includes optional disinfection and retesting stages.
- Flow and volumes: Initial feed 20 bed volumes at 10 BV/h, then test flow at 5 ± 0.25 BV/h; typical resin volumes referenced in Annex B.
- Quality control: Procedural blanks, device control (flush device until column outlet TOC < 0.5 mg/L), and cleaned glassware and reagents of analytical grade.
- Reporting: Test report content and calculation methods for sampling modes A and B are specified (including bed volume definitions and sampling intervals).
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers of ion exchange and adsorbent resins for potable water systems - to validate product safety and document migration behaviour.
- Independent testing laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing migration testing for drinking water contact materials.
- Water utilities and treatment equipment suppliers assessing resin suitability for potable use (softening, contaminant removal).
- Regulators and certification schemes that require standardized migration data to support approval or national compliance.
- Product development teams using migration data to optimize resin formulation and pre-treatment procedures.
