Overview

EN IEC 60794-1-402:2021 (Method H2) specifies a lightning test for optical fibre cables used as overhead conductors - specifically OPGW (optical ground wire), OPPC (optical phase conductor) and OPAC (optical attached cable). Published by CLC/CENELEC and identical to IEC 60794-1-402:2021, this document defines the purpose, sample requirements, test arrangement and electrical parameters to evaluate the mechanical and optical effects of a simulated lightning strike.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and purpose

    • Test is intended to evaluate the impact of a lightning strike and to compare performance between cable designs.
    • For OPAC the cable is installed on the messenger to simulate real installation; aim is to verify sheath integrity and limited fibre damage.
  • Sample and monitoring

    • Test sample taken at cable mid-point; at least 10 m between anchoring clamps.
    • Optical attenuation measurement per IEC 60793-1-46; optical test loop length > 100 m.
    • Preferably monitor at least 24 fibres (concatenated) or all fibres if fewer; samples should represent multiple units equally.
  • Apparatus and setup

    • Electrode (copper/iron rod) positioned above metallic cable, connected to cable by a metal fuse; gap ≈ 6 cm between electrode and cable surface.
    • Thermocouples, insulators, anchoring clamps and symmetric earthing connectors are used per the arrangement in the standard.
    • Applied tensile load on metallic cable sample is everyday stress (EDS) = 15 % ± 5 % of rated tensile strength (RTS), unless otherwise agreed.
  • Electrical test parameters (Method H2)

    • Four test classes defined (0–3) with fixed current, duration and charge transfer:
      • Class 0: 100 A, 0.5 s, 50 C
      • Class 1: 200 A, 0.5 s, 100 C
      • Class 2: 300 A, 0.5 s, 150 C
      • Class 3: 400 A, 0.5 s, 200 C
    • Parameters may be selected or agreed between customer and supplier according to cable construction.
  • Outcomes

    • Test checks for melting effects, sheath damage, and change in optical transmittance to determine acceptability.

Applications and users

  • Who uses it: fibre‑optic cable manufacturers, utilities (transmission/distribution operators), design engineers, independent test laboratories, procurement and standards compliance teams.
  • Why use it: to validate lightning robustness of overhead optical cables, compare alternative cable designs, support product qualification and procurement specifications, and reduce risk of service disruption after lightning events.

Related standards

  • IEC 60794-1-1 - Generic specification, general requirements
  • IEC 60793-1-46 - Optical fibres: monitoring changes in optical transmittance

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
