Overview

SIST EN ISO 7389:2004 is a European and International Standard specifying a precise method for determining the elastic recovery of sealants used in building construction jointing products. Published by CEN and aligned with ISO 7389:2002, this standard provides a rigorous test procedure to assess how well a sealant returns to its original dimensions after being extended and held in elongation. Elastic recovery is a crucial performance characteristic, indicating the durability and flexibility of the sealant under mechanical stress.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application: Applies to sealants in construction, focusing on their ability to recover elastically after extension.
  • Test Specimen Preparation: Sealants are applied between standardized substrates such as mortar, anodized aluminum, or glass, with dimensions and specimen assembly clearly defined.
  • Conditioning Methods: Two conditioning methods are specified:
    • Method A: 28 days at controlled temperature (23±2 °C) and humidity (50±5%).
    • Method B: Includes Method A followed by cyclic exposures to heat (70±2 °C) and water immersion to simulate environmental influence, enhancing test realism.
  • Test Procedure: Specimens are stretched to 25%, 60%, or 100% elongation and held for 24 hours. Elastic recovery is measured one hour after releasing the specimen.
  • Calculation of Elastic Recovery: Expressed as a percentage relative to the elongation, using precise width measurements before extension, during extension, and after recovery.
  • Reporting Requirements: Test reports must document sealant type, batch, substrate material, conditioning method, elongation percent, individual and average elastic recovery percentages, as well as any deviations from the standard.

Applications

SIST EN ISO 7389:2004 is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and quality assurance teams focusing on:

  • Sealant Evaluation: Verifying sealant performance for use in expansion joints, curtain walls, façade seals, and other building applications where joint flexibility and resilience are critical.
  • Product Development: Guiding formulation adjustments to enhance elastic properties, ensuring sealants meet expected service life demands.
  • Compliance and Certification: Fulfilling regulatory requirements and ensuring conformity with European and international quality standards in construction materials.
  • Durability Testing: Method B conditioning simulates real-world exposure, providing insights into long-term sealant behavior under temperature and moisture cycles.

Related Standards

  • ISO 6927: Vocabulary of jointing products and sealants, offering standardized terminology supporting clear communication in testing and specification.
  • ISO 13640: Specifications for test substrates, ensuring uniformity in materials used across sealant testing processes to produce comparable results.
  • EN 27389:1990 (now superseded): Previous European standard on sealant recovery; SIST EN ISO 7389:2004 replaces it with updated methods and requirements.

By adhering to SIST EN ISO 7389:2004, industry professionals can confidently assess the elastic recovery of sealants, ensuring better durability, quality, and performance in building construction jointing solutions. This contributes to reliable, long-lasting sealing applications that maintain building integrity under dynamic environmental and mechanical conditions.

ISO 7389:2002(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard ISO7389 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC59, Building construction,
Subcommittee SC 8, Jointing products.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 7389:1987), subclauses 5.1 and 5.7 and clause 8 of
which have been technically revised.
