Overview

SIST EN 300 162-1 V1.3.1:2003 is a standard focusing on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and radio spectrum matters for radiotelephone transmitters and receivers used in the maritime mobile service, specifically within VHF (Very High Frequency) bands. Developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST), this standard sets forth the technical characteristics and methods of measurement required for maritime VHF radiotelephone equipment, ensuring reliable communication and regulatory compliance in line with both European and international requirements.

This version updates references, particularly those concerning Appendix 18 of the Radio Regulations, aligning them with the radio regulations dated 2001. Compliance with this standard is critical for manufacturers, regulators, and marine operators who design, test, or deploy VHF radio equipment for maritime use.

Key Topics

  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): Details requirements to minimize interference and ensure stable operation of maritime VHF equipment within shared radio frequency environments.
  • Technical Specifications: Outlines construction, labelling, control interfaces, and safety precautions for VHF radiotelephone equipment.
  • Performance Requirements: Addresses transmitter power, frequency accuracy, audio characteristics, and receiver sensitivity.
  • Testing and Measurement: Specifies standardized methods for evaluating equipment, including measurements under normal and extreme environmental conditions.
  • Environmental and Operational Testing: Encompasses vibration, temperature, and humidity tests to validate equipment reliability in maritime environments.
  • Duplex Operation: Defines requirements for devices capable of simultaneous transmission and reception, ensuring minimal interference.
  • Update on Regulatory References: Incorporates changes to regulatory references, ensuring continued alignment with international radio regulations.

Applications

The SIST EN 300 162-1 V1.3.1:2003 standard is targeted at equipment intended for use in maritime mobile VHF communications. Key applications include:

  • Commercial and Recreational Vessel Communications: Ensures that radiotelephone systems used for ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communications operate reliably and without causing or suffering from harmful interference.
  • Maritime Safety Systems: Supports integration with the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), providing a foundation for distress calling, safety, and navigational communications.
  • Marine Equipment Type Approval: Assists manufacturers and testing bodies in evaluating compliance, facilitating market access and certification for marine VHF radio products.
  • Port Authorities and Coastguard Operations: Guarantees that installed equipment meets robust operational and environmental criteria, ensuring mission-critical performance in demanding maritime conditions.

Related Standards

For a comprehensive conformity assessment and to ensure robust design and operational integration, the following related standards should be considered:

  • EN 301 025: Electromagnetic compatibility and radio spectrum matters for VHF maritime mobile transmitting and receiving equipment.
  • EN 60945: Maritime navigation and radiocommunication equipment and systems - General requirements - Methods of testing and required test results.
  • IEC 61162: Maritime navigation and radiocommunication equipment and systems - Digital interfaces.
  • Appendix 18 of the ITU Radio Regulations (2001 edition): Governs the assignment and use of frequencies for the maritime mobile service.
  • IMO SOLAS Regulations: Provide broader requirements for maritime safety equipment including communication systems.

Adhering to SIST EN 300 162-1 V1.3.1:2003 helps ensure equipment reliability, regulatory acceptance, and safe maritime communications, supporting both safety at sea and efficient vessel operations.
