Overview
SIST EN 1269:2024 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies a standardized method to assess impregnations and other surface treatments applied to needled textile floor coverings. The evaluation is conducted by a soiling test using a castor chair apparatus and a controlled application of standard artificial soil. This method allows manufacturers and testing laboratories to determine the resistance of treated needled floor coverings against soiling, which directly impacts their appearance retention and durability.
This standard supersedes EN 1269:2019 and incorporates significant technical updates to improve test consistency and comparability. It is applicable to various commercial needled floor coverings and ensures reliable quality control and product performance verification.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose: Defines a method to evaluate impregnation treatments in needled textile floor coverings by evaluating soiling resistance.
- Test Principle: Standard artificial soil is evenly distributed on test specimens, which are then subjected to simulated wear (rolling action from castors under defined load). The extent of soiling is quantified by color contrast changes against untreated controls.
- Apparatus and Materials:
- Castor chair apparatus with a 60 kg load, per ISO 4918.
- Soil distributor with defined dual sieve mesh for uniform soil distribution.
- Standard artificial soil with precise mineral and colorimetric composition.
- Vacuum cleaner and grey scale for soil removal and color assessment.
- Specimen Preparation: Samples cut as quadrants with controlled orientation and fixed on supports, representing a range of color shades.
- Test Procedure:
- Conditioning of specimens in standardized atmosphere.
- Application and vibration of standard soil.
- 100 cycles of castor rolling in one direction, followed by vacuum cleaning.
- Repetition in opposite rotation direction.
- Assessment using grey scale to measure color change.
- Result Expression: Color change grade is recorded for each specimen; the worst grade among multiple colors represents the final test result.
- Test Reporting: Includes referencing the standard, product details, conditioning atmosphere, specimen count, grades, observations, and any deviations.
Applications
SIST EN 1269:2024 is essential for:
- Manufacturers seeking to validate the effectiveness of surface treatments and impregnations on needled floor coverings.
- Quality Control Laboratories performing standardized soiling resistance evaluations.
- Product Development teams optimizing formulations for enhanced soiling resistance.
- Specifiers and Architects aiming to select needled textile floor coverings that maintain appearance in heavy-use environments.
- Regulatory Compliance and Certification for product claims related to dirt and soil resistance.
By using this standard, stakeholders ensure consistent, repeatable assessment aligned with best practices recognized across Europe and other regions adopting CEN standards.
