This European Standard describes a method for the determination of burning rate under ambient conditions for propellants and black powders.
It is applicable to propellants and black powders in their original form up to a grain size of 8 mm.

Dieses Dokument legt ein Verfahren für die Bestimmung der Brenngeschwindigkeit von Schießpulver bei Umgebungsbedingungen fest. Es ist für Schießpulver und für Schwarzpulver in deren ursprünglichen Form bis zu einer Korngröße von 8 mm anwendbar.
ANMERKUNG 1   Die Kenntnis über die Brenngeschwindigkeit ist von großer Bedeutung, um mit den Risiken in Zusammenhang mit der Handhabung solcher Explosivstoffe umzugehen, und um zu beurteilen, ob die Leistungsmerkmale erfüllt sind.
ANMERKUNG 2   In Fällen, in denen die Verwendung von Treibladungspulver mit einer Korngröße über 8 mm üblich ist, wird ihre Brenngeschwindigkeit stärker von den Parametern des Elements, das sie enthält, beeinflusst und gesteuert, und daher ist die Kenntnis ihrer Brenngeschwindigkeit bei Umgebungsbedingungen nicht von großer Bedeutung.

Le présent document spécifie une méthode de détermination de la vitesse de combustion dans les conditions ambiantes pour les poudres pour armes. Il est applicable aux poudres pour armes et aux poudres noires dans leur forme d'origine, jusqu'à une granulométrie de 8 mm
NOTE 1   La connaissance de la vitesse de combustion est de la plus haute importance pour gérer les risques associés à la manipulation de ces explosifs et pour vérifier si les caractéristiques de performance sont respectées.
NOTE 2   Dans les cas où les poudres propulsives ayant une granulométrie supérieure à 8 mm sont couramment utilisées, leur vitesse de combustion est davantage influencée et contrôlée par les paramètres de l'élément qui les contient, et donc la connaissance de la vitesse de combustion dans les conditions ambiantes n'est pas d'une grande importance.

This document (prEN 13938-4:2021) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 321
“Explosives for civil uses”, the secretariat of which is held by UNE.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document will supersede EN 13938-4:2003.
In comparison with the previous edition, the following technical modifications have been made:
a) Clause 1, Scope, has been updated;
b) the normative references have been updated;
c) in Clause 3, Terms and definitions, the terms 3.2 and 3.3 have been added;
d) technical revision of the method for clarification purposes;
e) Clause 8, Calculation of results, has been added to Clause 7, Procedure;
f) Annex A, Range of applicability of the test method, has been removed;
g) Annex ZA has been updated.
This document has been prepared under a Standardization Request (M/562) annexed to the Commission
Implementing Decision C(2019)6634 final as regards Explosives for civil uses given to CEN by the

1 Scope
This document specifies a method for the determination of burning rate under ambient conditions for
solid gun propellants. It is applicable to solid gun propellants and black powder in their original form up
to a grain size of 8 mm.
NOTE 1 Knowledge of burning rate is of high importance to manage risks associated with handling such
explosives and of high importance to assess whether performance characteristics are met.
