Overview

SIST EN 300 454-2 V1.1.1:2001 specifies essential requirements for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and efficient use of the radio spectrum for wide band audio link equipment. This harmonized European Standard aligns specifically with Article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive (Directive 1999/5/EC), ensuring that professional wideband audio systems avoid harmful interference and make effective use of assigned radio frequencies. The standard applies to wideband audio link equipment operating between 25 MHz and 3 GHz, providing clear criteria for manufacturers and users to demonstrate compliance and facilitate market access within the European Union.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability:
    • Focuses on professional wideband audio links, including one-way and two-way systems as well as those with additional facilities.
    • Excludes equipment using TDMA, frequency hopping, or spread spectrum modulation techniques.
  • Technical Requirements:
    • Transmitter and Receiver Specifications: Frequency error, carrier power, channel bandwidth, and spurious emissions.
    • Environmental Profile: Equipment must meet requirements across the designated operational environment, determined by the product’s environmental class.
  • Testing and Conformance:
    • Conformance is demonstrated through specified measurement and testing procedures.
    • Detailed guidance for test conditions, required measurement uncertainties, and interpretation of results.
    • Documentation includes requirements tables identifying which attributes are mandatory for compliance.
  • Relation to the R&TTE Directive:
    • Directly supports Article 3.2, requiring that radio equipment effectively uses spectrum and avoids harmful interference.

Applications

SIST EN 300 454-2 V1.1.1:2001 is valuable for a range of professional audio applications, particularly those relying on robust and interference-free transmission:

  • Broadcasting
Professional radio microphones, wireless intercoms, and audio links in studio and live event environments benefit from standards-driven assurance of EMC and spectral integrity.

  • Live Events and Theatre
Wireless audio systems used on stage or in venues ensure clear transmission without mutual interference, as required by modern production values and safety standards.

  • Corporate and Conferencing Solutions
Enables reliable operation of wireless audio links in complex installations, providing confidence in performance and regulatory compliance.

  • Manufacturing and Design
Equipment manufacturers can demonstrate compliance with EU radio and EMC requirements, streamlining processes for market access and conformity assessment.

Related Standards

Organizations working towards compliance or system integration should also consider related standards, including:

  • SIST EN 300 454-1
Covers the technical characteristics and test methods for wideband audio links, providing detail on performance parameters referenced in Part 2.
  • Directive 1999/5/EC (R&TTE Directive)
Establishes regulatory requirements for radio and telecommunications terminal equipment in the European market.
  • EMC Directive 89/336/EEC
Addresses broader requirements for electromagnetic compatibility of equipment.
  • LV Directive 73/23/EEC
Specifies safety requirements associated with low-voltage electrical equipment.

By adhering to SIST EN 300 454-2 V1.1.1:2001, organizations ensure that their wideband audio link solutions operate efficiently within the allocated radio spectrum, comply with European regulatory frameworks, and minimize the risk of interference, thereby supporting innovation and reliability in professional wireless audio systems.

The left hand edge of the figure 1 shows the different subclauses of Article 3 of the R&TTE Directive [1].
For article 3.3 various horizontal boxes are shown. Dotted lines indicate that at the time of publication of the present
document essential requirements in these areas have to be adopted by the Commission. If such essential requirements are
adopted, and as far and as long as they are applicable, they will justify individual standards whose scope is likely to be
specified by function or interface type.
