Aerospace series - Elements of electrical and optical connection - Test methods - Part 6306: Optical elements - Mould growth

This standard specifies a method of checking the ability of optical connection elements (including permanent connections) and fibre optic couplers or specimens of the materials used in the manufacture and termination of optical components, to withstand mould or fungus growth without deterioration.
It shall be used together with EN 2591-100.

Overview: EN 2591-6306:2001 (Mould growth for optical elements)

EN 2591-6306:2001 is a European aerospace standard that defines a test method for assessing the resistance of optical connection elements (including permanent connections), fibre optic couplers, and material specimens used in optical component manufacture to mould or fungus growth. It is part of the Aerospace series – Elements of electrical and optical connection – Test methods and is intended to be used together with EN 2591-100 (General) and related test parts.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Verifies whether optical elements and related materials withstand mould/fungus growth without deterioration.
  • Linked test methods: Test methods referenced are EN 2591-306 (mould growth procedures, Method A or B), with preparatory and post-test steps following EN 2591-100 general rules.
  • Specimen preparation:
    • Materials and components are prepared per EN 2591-306.
    • Optical connection elements are mated and fitted with terminated contacts and standard accessories.
    • Assembled specimens shall not be cleaned before the test.
    • Technical specifications should indicate details such as type and length of cable/fibre and maximum insertion loss where applicable.
  • Measurements and acceptance criteria:
    • Initial measurements as applicable per EN 2591-306.
    • After exposure, visual inspection per EN 2591-6101 - there shall be no mould growth before unmating optical elements.
    • Electrical/optical performance check - insertion loss measured according to EN 2591-601, with insertion loss measured after cleaning of optical faces as required.
  • Recovery and final evaluation: Recovery and final measurement procedures follow EN 2591-306 clauses.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Aerospace OEMs and subcontractors specifying optical connectors and fibre assemblies for aircraft and space systems.
  • Design and qualification engineers validating long-term reliability of optical components in humid or biologically active environments.
  • Test laboratories performing standardized environmental and biological durability testing on fibre optic components.
  • Materials suppliers and connector manufacturers verifying component resistance to fungus/mould for procurement and quality control.

Related standards

  • EN 2591-100 - Test methods - General
  • EN 2591-306 - Test methods - Mould growth (Methods A and B)
  • EN 2591-601 - Optical elements - Insertion loss
  • EN 2591-6101 - Optical elements - Visual examination

This standard is essential for ensuring the biological durability and optical performance of aerospace fibre optic connections where mould growth could compromise safety, signal integrity, or long-term reliability.
