Overview
EN 914:2020 is the CEN European standard for gymnastic equipment specifically covering parallel bars and combination asymmetric/parallel bars. It sets out functional and specific safety requirements and defines test methods to verify compliance. EN 914:2020 is intended for equipment used under the supervision of a competent person and supersedes EN 914:2008.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and classification
- Applies to three types of parallel bars (Types 1, 2 and 3) including competition configurations where FIG rules apply.
- Equipment classification and sizing are defined in tabular form (Table 1 and Table 2) and illustrated (Figures 1–2, Annex A).
- Dimensions and profiles
- Mandatory dimensional ranges and acceptable bar profiles are specified (millimetre values in Table 2 / Figure 2).
- Safety requirements
- Complementary to general safety rules in EN 913; covers entrapment, clear path between uprights, stability, vertical stiffness, residual deflection, strength and framework rigidity.
- Clear path: test patterns verify minimum clearance; for Type 3 the clearance must be ≥ 480 mm.
- Stability: Types 1 & 2 must resist a horizontal force equal to 40% of self-weight (min 400 N) without tipping; Type 3 requires a tractive force ≥ 900 N.
- Vertical stiffness / deflection: For Types 1 & 2, bars loaded at (1 350 ± 50) N must deflect between 40 mm and 100 mm (residual ≤ 1 mm). For Type 3, load (1 350 ± 20) N, deflection 50–70 mm (residual ≤ 1 mm).
- Strength: Bars must show no fracture or rupture when subjected to (2 850 ± 50) N vertical force.
- Rigidity: At the supporting cup point, deflection must not exceed 20 mm under horizontal loads of (570 ± 20) N in longitudinal or transverse directions.
- Additional practical requirements
- Gaps between longitudinal/cross members must be filled up to member level (e.g., mats per EN 12503 series or platform base). For Type 3 competition use, framework must be covered by mats of total height 20 cm (per EN 12503‑1/EN 12503‑4).
- If provided, transport equipment should be inside/underneath and use four swivelling rollers firmly attached.
Applications - who uses this standard
- Manufacturers - design and produce compliant parallel bars and combination bars.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - perform the standardized tests (clear path, stability, stiffness, strength, rigidity).
- Sports facility managers, schools and clubs - specify safe equipment for supervised use and ensure installation meets EN 914:2020.
- Purchasers / specifiers - select equipment that conforms to CEN requirements for safety and performance.
- Inspectors and maintenance teams - use the standard’s test methods and marking/instruction requirements to verify ongoing safety.
Related standards
- EN 913 - General safety requirements and test methods for gymnastic equipment (read in conjunction with EN 914).
- EN 12503‑1 and EN 12503‑4:2016 - Gymnastic mats (safety requirements and shock absorption) referenced for gap filling and mat specifications.
- FIG (Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique) rules - applicable for competition setups where noted.
