oSIST prEN IEC 61009-2-1:2026/oprAA:2026 is a SIST draft amendment to the European draft standard prEN IEC 61009-2-1:2026. It concerns residual current operated circuit-breakers with integral overcurrent protection for household and similar uses (RCBOs) classified according to IEC 61009-1:2024, 4.1.1, and it adds or revises the tests used to verify compliance. In practice, it is aimed at manufacturers, test laboratories and certification bodies working with RCBOs up to 440 V AC, 125 A and 25 000 A short-circuit capacity.
What does oSIST prEN IEC 61009-2-1:2026/oprAA:2026 specify?
oSIST prEN IEC 61009-2-1:2026/oprAA:2026 specifies an amendment to the RCBO test standard used with IEC 61009-1:2024. It focuses on requirements, tests and test sequences for certification of RCBOs for household and similar applications.
The document is organized as modifications to the base text, mainly in Clause 9 and Annex A, plus two new normative annexes.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex ZA | Normative references to international publications with corresponding European publications |
| Annex ZB | Special National Conditions |
What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN IEC 61009-2-1:2026/oprAA:2026?
The amendment keeps the scope on RCBOs according to IEC 61009-1:2024, 4.1.1, intended for voltages up to 440 V AC, frequencies of 50 Hz, 60 Hz or 50/60 Hz, currents up to 125 A and rated short-circuit capacities up to 25 000 A. For users, that means the device rating and classification must match the document before the test route is selected.
Test setup and general conditions
Clause 9.9.1.1 and Clause 9.15.1 are modified. In practice, this updates the test circuit, the test procedure and the general test conditions used for verification, so laboratories need to follow the amended procedure rather than relying only on the unmodified base text.
Low-temperature verification
A new Clause 9.Z1 verifies correct operation at low ambient air temperatures for RCBOs used between -25 °C and +40 °C. Enclosed-type RCBOs are tested in their enclosure, and unenclosed-type RCBOs are mounted in an individual IP55 enclosure and connected as in normal use.
The test cycle uses temperature and humidity conditioning, repeated five times. The RCBO shall not trip during the cycles, and after the low-temperature test it must still be possible to switch it on at -25 °C without residual current. For type A and type S RCBOs, the clause adds residual-current tests at the low-temperature point, with break time checked against the relevant limit in the base standard. This matters because it checks both operation and recovery in cold conditions.
Figures and test sequences
Figure 2 is revised to cover operating characteristics, trip-free mechanism and low-ambient-temperature behaviour. New Figure Z6 gives the low-temperature test cycle. Annex A tables are also updated so the test program matches the new low-temperature check and the revised sample planning.
Sample numbers and routing
Tables A.1 to A.5 are modified for full and simplified test procedures, including sample counts for devices with different protected poles, different instantaneous tripping currents and different classifications according to IEC 61009-1:2024. For manufacturers and labs, this affects how many samples are needed and which tests are run on which samples.
National application
Annex ZB records special national conditions. In Germany, type AC RCBOs are not permitted. Ireland and the United Kingdom retain specified table and footnote conditions in Annex A.
What terms does oSIST prEN IEC 61009-2-1:2026/oprAA:2026 define?
- Residual current operated circuit-breaker with integral overcurrent protection (RCBO) - A protective device that combines residual current protection and overcurrent protection in one unit.
- Type A - An RCBO type that is also tested with pulsating DC residual currents in the low-temperature verification.
- Type S - A selective RCBO type with its own low-temperature and breaking-time checks.
- Protected pole - A pole of an RCBO that is protected by the device and is used in the sample and test tables.
- Residual current - The current used in the tests to verify tripping and break time performance.
- Instantaneous tripping current - The current level used to classify some of the sample and sequence arrangements in Annex A.
- IP55 - The enclosure degree of protection used for testing unenclosed-type RCBOs in the low-temperature clause.
Who uses oSIST prEN IEC 61009-2-1:2026/oprAA:2026?
RCBO manufacturers use it to design products and plan verification tests. Test laboratories use it to set up the test circuit, sample counts and environmental conditioning.
Certification bodies use it for compliance assessment and certification testing. Quality managers, electrical product engineers and buyers use it to check whether a device matches the required RCBO classification, ratings and test regime for a given application.
What changed in oSIST prEN IEC 61009-2-1:2026/oprAA:2026 from the previous edition?
Compared with prEN IEC 61009-2-1:2026, this amendment adds the low-temperature verification in 9.Z1, revises Figure 2, adds Figure Z6 and updates the test-sequence and sample-number tables in Annex A. It also adds Annex ZA and Annex ZB. The foreword states that only the essential common changes existing in EN 61009-2-1:1994 and its amendments and corrigenda are maintained in this document.
Which standards are used with oSIST prEN IEC 61009-2-1:2026/oprAA:2026?
- prEN IEC 61009-2-1:2026 - The base European draft standard that this amendment modifies.
- IEC 61009-1:2024 - Provides the general rules and the main reference framework for RCBOs.
- IEC 61543:2022 - Gives the electromagnetic compatibility requirements for residual current-operated protective devices.
- IEC 62873-2 - Provides vocabulary for residual current devices.
What does the oSIST prEN IEC 61009-2-1:2026/oprAA:2026 document contain?
The document contains the amendment text, including changes to the test circuit, general test conditions, a new low-temperature verification clause, a revised figure for the test circuit, and a new figure for the low-temperature cycle. It also updates the Annex A test-sequence tables and sample-count tables used for full and simplified test procedures.
Annex ZA links the international references to their European publications, and Annex ZB records special national conditions. Together, these parts show how the RCBO tests are to be applied for certification and for national implementation.
