Overview
SIST EN ISO 3262-15:2023, titled Extenders - Specifications and methods of test - Part 15: Vitreous silica, is a comprehensive European and international standard prepared by CEN and ISO Technical Committees focused on pigments, dyestuffs, and extenders. This standard specifies precise requirements and corresponding test methods for vitreous silica, a key non-crystalline form of silica used extensively as an extender in various industrial applications.
The updated 2023 edition supersedes the previous 2001 version, providing revised test methods and classification of vitreous silica grades to enhance quality control and consistency in its usage. It defines two grades of vitreous silica-Grade A (transparent quartz glass) and Grade B (opaque fused silica)-and establishes strict criteria for composition, purity, and physical properties.
Key Topics
Vitreous Silica Definition: Non-crystalline form of silica supplied as a fine powder, divided into:
- Grade A (Quartz Glass) – transparent, from molten rock crystal.
- Grade B (Fused Silica) – opaque, from molten silica sand with microscopic gas bubbles.
Requirements and Test Methods:
- Minimum silica content: 99.5% for Grade A and 99% for Grade B.
- Maximum quartz and cristobalite content specified, verified by X-ray diffraction.
- Limits on volatile matter, loss on ignition, water solubles, pH, and resistivity.
- Particle size distribution measured by laser diffraction (ISO 8130-13).
Sampling Procedures:
- Sampling must comply with ISO 15528 to ensure representative testing.
Silica Content Determination:
- Detailed chemical analysis using sulfuric and hydrofluoric acid treatments.
- Measurement of ignition residues via muffle furnace in controlled conditions.
Test Reporting:
- Reports must identify the product tested, methodology, compliance status, deviations, anomalies, and test date to ensure traceability and accountability.
Applications
Vitreous silica, as standardized by SIST EN ISO 3262-15:2023, serves critical roles in industries requiring extenders with specific purity and particle characteristics, including:
- Paints and Coatings: Enhances durability, opacity, and rheological properties.
- Plastics and Rubber: Improves mechanical strength and thermal stability.
- Ceramics and Glass Manufacturing: Acts as filler or reinforcing agent.
- Chemical and Pharmaceutical Formulations: Used for controlled absorbency and anti-caking properties.
- Electronics and Optics: Transparent Grade A vitreous silica finds application in high-purity glass products.
The standard ensures uniformity and quality of vitreous silica products, enabling manufacturers and end-users to optimize performance and compliance with safety and environmental guidelines.
Related Standards
SIST EN ISO 3262-15:2023 builds on and references several key international standards to ensure comprehensive testing and quality assurance of pigments and extenders:
- ISO 787 Series: General test methods for pigments and extenders concerning volatile matter, water solubility, oil absorption, pH, and resistivity.
- ISO 8130-13: Particle size analysis by laser diffraction for coating powders.
- ISO 15528: Sampling of paints, varnishes, and raw materials.
- ISO 3262-1: Introduction and general test methods for extenders.
- ISO 18451-1: Terminology for pigments, dyestuffs, and extenders.
- ISO 3696: Specifications for water used in analytical laboratory tests.
By adhering to SIST EN ISO 3262-15:2023 alongside these referenced standards, laboratories and manufacturers can maintain high precision and consistency in vitreous silica quality control processes.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance
