Overview

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-25:2022/A11:2022 is an amendment to the European Standard EN IEC 60335-2-25:2021, which specifies particular safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, focusing on microwave ovens, including combination microwave ovens. This amendment, approved by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC), introduces common modifications to align with European practices and regulatory frameworks, especially within the context of the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU). The standard aims to address safety hazards associated with the use of microwave ovens in households and similar settings, ensuring higher protection for users and property.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability

    • Applies to household and similar use of microwave ovens and combination microwave ovens.
    • Considers common hazards encountered during normal use by all persons in household environments.
    • Special mention of environments like shops, farmhouses, hotels, and bed-and-breakfast premises.
  • User Groups

    • The standard does not cover use by very young children or unsupervised young children.
    • Recognizes that certain vulnerable individuals may require additional protections not addressed here.
  • Temperature Control and Safety Markings

    • Introduces amendments regarding maximum allowable temperature rises on external surfaces.
    • Expands requirements for safety markings such as the visibility and legibility of warnings like "CAUTION: Hot surface" or the IEC 60417-5041 symbol, with defined minimum sizes for text and symbols.
  • Constructional Safety

    • Specifies the use of test probes for constructional assessment, referencing IEC 61032 standards.
    • Includes updated requirements for external accessible surfaces to enhance safety during operation.
  • Conformity with EU Directives

    • Compliance with this standard is one means of presuming conformity with the EU Low Voltage Directive.
    • Makes references to harmonized standards and European legislation.

Applications

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-25:2022/A11:2022 is critical for:

  • Manufacturers of microwave ovens and combination microwave ovens who aim to market their appliances in the European Union and EFTA countries. By implementing these safety requirements, manufacturers demonstrate compliance with legal and regulatory frameworks and promote user safety.
  • Distributors and Retailers seeking to ensure their product lines are compliant with the latest safety standards, minimizing liability and aligning with consumer safety expectations.
  • Testing and Certification Bodies tasked with conformity assessments for electrical appliances. This standard provides clear criteria and references for rigorous safety testing and certification processes.
  • Design Engineers working on new or updated models of microwave ovens, as it offers specific guidance on construction, labeling, and safety performance.
  • Importers who must verify that products brought into the EU market comply with harmonized standards before distribution.

Related Standards

Several related standards are referenced within SIST EN IEC 60335-2-25:2022/A11:2022 for comprehensive product compliance:

  • EN 60335-1: General requirements for safety of household and similar electrical appliances.
  • EN IEC 60335-2-25:2021: The base standard for microwave oven safety requirements.
  • IEC 61032: Test probe specifications for electrical safety testing.
  • EN 60068 series: Standards for environmental testing, including vibration, shock, and salt mist.
  • EN ISO 13732-1: Standard on temperature limits and skin exposure to hot surfaces.
  • EN 60335-2-6 & EN 60335-2-9: Standards for other cooking appliances such as ovens and toasters.
  • EN 60519-6: Electrical heating equipment safety.

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-25:2022/A11:2022 reinforces the importance of harmonized safety practices in the design, production, and lifecycle management of microwave ovens in the European market, assisting stakeholders in achieving both legal compliance and high safety standards.
